I Didn't Get That Memo

Apparently, today is "if-you're-on-crack, go-to-the-bank-day." Weird customers seem to come in groups. I can go for weeks at a time without a single certifiably crazy customer, but when they do come, they invite their friends. So if you're on crack, get to the bank.

Pass the Joe

Just when I was thinking about kicking the coffee habit, it turns out coffee is good for you (at least that's what they are saying today).

Five Questions

*Why is that Oxiclean guy always yelling?

*How come I can tell someone they're ugly and they take it as an insult but if I tell them they're being ugly, they take it as a reprimand? (applies to southerners only)

*What's the deal with Michael Jackson?

*Who am I more sick of hearing about: Howard Dean or John Kerry?

*Who else is ready for the summer Olympics? (I'm not ready for them in the sense that I've been training for years and now I'm ready to win a medal. I'm just ready to watch them.)

Riddle Me This

Okay, we all know how to play Freezetag and we know how to play Chinese Freezetag, but the question is: why is Chinese Freezetag called Chinese Freezetag? Is there something particularly Chinese about crawling under someone? Was the game invented by someone from China? Do the kids in China play it that way and just call it "Freezetag"?

All complex questions, I know. Just something for you to think about today.

My Monthly "I Like Life" Post

I commented elsewhere this week that graduating college was the worst thing that ever happened to me - at least it seemed like it at the time. The moment I graduated, my life changed in ways it never had before and probably never will again. There is such security in being in school: there's always a break in sight, and you always know what you're going to do the next year - go back to school. Well, my first few months post-college were tough and there were more than a few nights that I went to bed thinking, "I'll never be really happy or have fun again." As with many thoughts I've had before, I was wrong.
Lately, when people ask me how things are in Monroe, I've taken the attitude that it's fine for now, but I don't really like the city itself and don't see myself living here forever. And while I'll maintain that the city is certainly lacking in many areas, and only God knows if I'll live here 6 months from now or 20 years from now, it struck me in the wee hours this morning (in one of those rare 2am epiphanies), that the city itself has little to do with my happiness. After a day filled with meeting friends at various places (including, but not limited to, The Airport Lounge), I couldn't help but smile when I thought about my earlier fear that I would never be happy again as I went to sleep thinking, "I really love it here."

This is Emily at her wedding. For those of you who missed the event or just want to see it again, there are more pictures here.

Rabbit Ears and Dial-Up

Since we moved into the new place, Rachel and I decided to wait on getting cable. It's not a problem. The only things I watch on TV come on the networks and I can pick them up with an antenna (except for Fox - I miss 24). But I have to say, I really miss cable modem. Even though I was on the wireless router before and it was possibly the slowest cable modem of all time, it was still faster than 26.2 dial up. The problem is, even if we decide it's worth paying for cable, there's only one cable outlet and it's downstairs, so we would have to pay even more to have extra outlets installed upstairs. I guess I'll have to decide if I really want to pay for my lack of patience.

I Do Not Wear Prada

Over the weekend, I read The Devil Wears Prada. I know, I know: not exactly fine literature, but you know what? I don't care. If I wait around to read fine literature, then well, I just don't read very often. I enjoyed it. Though I intended to learn nothing from it, it actually made me think about a few things: first, no matter how fashionable I think I am, I'm not. At all. (Not that that's a big deal.) Second, it made me realize what a cushy job I have and how much I like my co-workers. Third, it made me realize that I'm a really bad friend sometimes. I get so wrapped up me that I forget the relationships that make me who I am. Fourth, it made me really want a good latte. In fact, I've been to three local coffee shops and have been (of course) quite dissapointed. I think Milo's on 18th Street is the best of the 3, but I still want someone to make me a latte that is worthy of a habit. Oh, and one more thing the book reminded me of: success is relative.

Dear President Bush,

It's pronounced just like it's spelled: NU-CLE-AR.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

"The Power of Music" or "Why Fleetwood Mac Blows My Mind"

I guess I've just listened to the radio too much my entire life. Sometimes I think I must know every song ever released on the radio - at least a little bit of it. Of course, I've been aware of my useless knowledge of mediocre songs for a while, but it really struck me the other day when I heard a Fleetwood Mac album and I knew nearly every word of the whole album. I've never listened to Fleetwood Mac - not actively, anyway - yet I can sing along like they were my favorite group of all time. If only I could pick up useful information in such a passive way...

Who Killed My Muse?

I've been wanting to blog for a while now, but I've hit an impasse. Not wanting to be too personal or too silly or too mundane or faux-deep on my blog leaves me with nothing much to say right now. (Not that it's ever stopped me before.)
My life has had a strangely dreamlike quality lately: like it's not really happening - not that anything terribly unusual is going on - but even everyday things like work and driving and grocery shopping have a surreal quality to them. Maybe it's because my new place doesn't really feel like home yet.
Or maybe I'm just losing it. Only time will tell.

Rupert's Back

I was pleased to see the Survivor All-stars season includes everybody's favorite pirate, Rupert. Any predictions?

I Guess I'll Never Understand

What's the deal with college students thinking empty alcohol bottles are a good decoration?
It's not a trophy. It's garbage.

I Had My Doubts

...but I made it through last week. With the combination of moving, Emily's wedding, and all the things I normally have to do, I was unbelieveably busy last week. There were times when I was on the verge of a meltdown, but I only lost my composure for about 5 minutes. The wedding went really well. The reception was a blast and it was fun to see everyone who came in to town for the big event.
I got everything moved out of the old apartment and turned my keys in about 10 minutes before I was supposed to be at the church for wedding pictures. Nothin' like the last minute. I've got all my boxes unpacked and everything in it's new place (with only a few things MIA). Now I can relax. Ahhh.
