I guess I've just listened to the radio too much my entire life. Sometimes I think I must know every song ever released on the radio - at least a little bit of it. Of course, I've been aware of my useless knowledge of mediocre songs for a while, but it really struck me the other day when I heard a Fleetwood Mac album and I knew nearly every word of the whole album. I've never listened to Fleetwood Mac - not actively, anyway - yet I can sing along like they were my favorite group of all time. If only I could pick up useful information in such a passive way...

I think it is crazy how most all of us do exactly what you are saying. In fact, it's worse than that for me. I can remember trivial conversations people have had around me, that didn't have anything whatsoever to do with me. Not that I'm trying to remember this stuff, but I would like to be able to effortlessly remember the birthdays in my family instead. Thank God for definitive justification, it is important enough that if were up to me; I'd have forgotten to do it.
