One of the men who helped facilitate her ordination, Hansen, says near the end of the article that he wants to do what is right in the eyes of the church, and make sure that "Christ is made known." If we are to divorce the teachings of Christ (say against homosexuality) from His "purpose" or "mission," then tell me, just what does it mean to make Christ known? Christ apart from His teachings is not the Christ of Scripture at all: "if you love me you will keep my commandments." Indeed are we not forewarned? "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them."

In the process of writing a research paper on religious pluralism's affect on education I came across some interesting ideas.

It must be said that the provision "Congress shall make no law respecting an establisment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" was intended to protect religion from the state, not the state from religion as is so often assumed.

In 1960 1% of children in school came from divorced parents in 1990 it was almost 50% (New York Times April 12th, A13). How much has it increased since 1990?

Who says parents don't influence their children? What if the parents happen to be homosexual? Are we surprised to read that the children of homosexual parents are far more likely to experiment sexually, and at a younger age? If the children are being reared in a home where morality is decided by one's free-choice (whim), then what is to stop the kids from putting the principle into action?

These types of cases are popping up all over the nation; the intent, so it seems to me, is not so much to acquire benefits as "partners," but rather to put pressure on lawmakers and courts to legalize same-sex marriages. Let us hope that Yeshiva sticks to their guns, and fights this one to the end.

Maybe the Pre-Tribulational Rapture thing is true; are not these chips considered by some Dispensationalists to be the "mark of the Beast" as prophecied in Revelation? My want is to poke fun at the ideas that pervade such eschatalogical speculation (maybe the CEO of IBM is the anti-Christ?), but I must remember that, for one, I used to believe such things, and two, many persons of sincere faith in Christ still do believe these things. Educating them in the truths of Biblical prophecy will not be accomplished by jokes.

Here's a tough issue. A woman who had been in a coma for 11 years was allowed by courts to be taken off the feeding machine (killed?). Her family wanted to keep her alive, but the husband said that his wife "would have wanted it that way." I found this last quote very interesting: "Terri Schiavo collapsed at her home in St. Petersburg Feb. 25, 1990, from a lack of potassium that may have come from an eating disorder. Her heart stopped and she was without oxygen for five minutes. Doctors say she is unaware of her surroundings and she will never get better. Her parents say she responds to sights and sounds." Is this contradictory testimony? Is the response to light and sound considered an improvement or is it the way it has been for 11 years? Is this type of "killing" ever justified?

Okay, well, just maybe people like Ron Gleason, Dr. Laura, Dennis Prager, many others and myself have been correct all along. Does it always take a Federal study to convince people?

We've all heard of "pork" as it relates to the extra stuff thrown in by legislators to get a certain bill passed. For instance they'll put in money for a new city park on a bill that is for the prohibition of smoking in public schools, what usually happens is that the bill gets passed: everyone cheers for outlawing smoking in public schools, but no one ever hears about the millions of dollars of taxpayer money that goes to fund some new park up the street. The park sorta "sneaks" in. Well here's a similar situation. Notice that alongside the prohibition to have sex with students, which is a good thing, is the (completely unrelated) prohibition: "Refraining from trying to influence students with their own political or religious beliefs." First off, how is this at all related to the real issue supposedly addressed by the proposal? And more importantly, is this not a not-so-clandestined attack on sharing the Gospel with students? In other words what we have here is another subtle move away from Christianity towards a completely secular school system.

So it seems there really is another theory explaining the origin of the universe, duh-- I always thought all real scientists were evolutionists! Glad to see that some of the scientific community is finally catching up with what the Bible has been saying for over 2500 years. Yet sadly enough, the avoidance to give God (the God of the Old and New Testaments, i.e. Christ, "through whom all things were made") the glory for creating the universe, even if one claims that Darwinism is wrong, touting some amorphous "god/designer"-- he is still lost in his sins. "Though they know God they suppress the truth in unrighteousness:" scientists who know there must be a "god" to account for all things, yet do not submit to Christ's Lordship, are those who suppress.

Don't move to Frisco. If you do your tax money will potentially be used to pay for things like sex changes. This does bring up an interesting subject. Is it our obligation to withold paying taxes if we know that the money will be used for evil, say aborting babies? Certainly the Bible does command us to pay our taxes, but if we are to disobey even our parents if they ask us to sin, how much more ought we rebel against the civil sphere? Would it be sinful to willingly give money to an organization that supported homosexuality or, for instance, was owned by the Mormon church? Are taxes different?

So the largest to date

So the largest to date study of children in daycare is released and what do we find? That children put into daycare for 30+ hours a week (which is the grand majority of daycare children) are far more likely to exhibit discipline problems by the time they are in Kindergarten. The study is a slam dunk for those of us who KNOW that children are better off being raised by a stay at home mother, but even such evidence isn't of much use. Why is that? Because the way the news media is reporting the story is that there is some "interesting" findings from the study of which "those children who are placed in the best daycares perform better in language skills than other children." In other words the news completely avoids the grand corpus of data that denies their world view, and they chose to only report bits and pieces of the report that favor their agenda. Surprised? No.

Of interest

Evidence for Christ's Crucifixion found in artifacts? If so, what would this mean for Christians? Is this the type of thing in which Christians ought to be concerned? It seems to me that there is already plenty of biblical and extra-biblical evidence for the historicity and resurrection of Christ. Though further "evidence" can be edifying to Christians it will always fall short of winning souls to the Gospel, for salvation is of grace through faith. Indeed did not Christ say to Thomas, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed"?

Nuclear families on the rebound? Is the pendulum swinging back, or is the growth in reformed theology starting to show its presence? And if we want these statistics to continue should we follow this guy's advice? He lists some interesting statistics about the benefits of marriage,but when he lists "recommendations" for improving marriage he fails to mention faith in Christ (and this is from a "Christian" source). Perhaps that is why so many marriages are so bad off. In the attempt to "save" marriage he lists recommendations such as creating programs at your local church, to promoting "pro-marriage" legislation, but he fails to mention a deeper dedication to the centrality of Christ in one's marriage, nor does he mention the church's common failure to preach law and gospel on Sunday as core reasons why marriage is still a 50/50 bet (practically).

Veritas forum at UCLA

The Veritas Forum is a Christian evangelistic outreach founded at Harvard University that is coming to UCLA for the second time in two years. I was fortunate enough to attend a couple of the lectures during last year's event, and I can vouch for the very powerful and compelling manner in which the speakers argue in favor of the need for faith in Christ. The Veritas approach is one that combines the proclamation of the Gospel with substantive intellectual argumentation from some of the keenest minds and brightest speakers in Christendom today. Some discussions of note are the following:

Monday, April 16th the impressive speaker and intellect Dr. Os Guinness will take the stage at 8pm to deliver a message on truth.
Tuesday, April 17th at 3:30pm the Rev. Lee Irons will be speaking on "the Days of Genesis: Literal Chronology or Figurative Framework?"
And Wednesday, April 18th at 2pm Greg Koukl will be speaking on relativism (a subject on which he wrote a book).

I encourage anyone interested to attend, and more importantly invite friends and family who do not have faith in Christ.

Whether it's Britney Spears dressed up in a tight shirt and short shorts, or Kevin Spacey having sex with a child in the movie Magnolia, or the American Psychological Association publishing an article that claims victims of sexual molestation may actually benefit from the experience, or organizations like the North American Man Boy Love Association growing in power and influence, or maybe the extremely pro-homosexual, liberal media is to blaim for this story being sidelined. After reading this, tell me, have you heard about this story? Didn't think so. If it wasn't for my pastor, Ron Gleason, commenting on it in our weekly bulletin I would not have known of it either.

The summary is this. A 13 year old boy, Jesse, was allowed to spend the weekend with a homosexual-male friend of the family (Should the parents be prosecuted for neglegence or worse? Yes). This "friend of the family" and his "partner" tied Jesse up and sexually assaulted him until he was near dead. When they found that Jesse had lost consciousness the two men took him to the Hospital, where he died. Now the story is sick and sad enough but the outstanding fact is that none (not ABC, not CBS, not NBC, not MSN, not Fox, not CNN, NONE) of the major news organizations even mentioned this story! And very few minor media agencies even mentioned it. Any guesses as to why? Maybe the producers of acts like Mandy Moore would have an answer.

May God have mercy on our nation.Another similar story. This isn't exactly a rare occurance.

Journalism at it's worst

My girlfriend, Katherine Davis, is the nemesis in this Orange County Register article. Here's the skinny:
Two weeks ago during Kate's Biology lecture, Professor Hurlbut conducted a discussion on anatomy (the subject was supposed to be chromosomal defects) which included pictures taken by Professor Hurlbut of her friend's genitalia-- this included some pictures of sexually aroused male genitalia (to which the professor commented "this man could be a porn star [it's so big]). These pictures were even introduced in a flippently joking style by Professor Hurlbut as possibly pornographic, yet that didn't seem to matter much to the professor.

In addition to subjecting the class to amateur photographs taken of her friend's penises and vaginas, Professor Hurlbut conducted a "lecture" that was downright vulgar and offensive. She talked using crude, degrading language; she referred to sexual acts and practices in the most juvenile, perverse way possible. Professor Hurlbut also used profanity to describe the potential "sexual intercourse" that a hermaphrodite might perform on itself. Without being too graphic the discussion included:

discussing the taste of semen.
the amount and volume of "moaning and screaming" that certain women's "parts" predispose them to.
how to "measure" a penis using your hand.
(as said above) whether or not hermaphrodites can F#$@ themselves.
"g-spots"
and what the professor considered to be grounds for calling a vagina a "cunt."

Mind you, this course is NOT a sexual education course (not that this material would even be appropriate for that), but this course is designed to educate the students on the study of life, and the study of the world. This type of discussion is more fitting to be placed in Hustler magazine than it is in a sex ed. class let alone a BIOLOGY 101 course!

Ann Pepper, the O.C. Register reporter, so blatantly avoids the heart of Kate's complaint that it is all too obvious that Miss Pepper is completely siding with Professor Hurlbut, and the Santiago Canyon School. Miss Pepper had every opportunity to represent Kate's position-- Kate provided Miss Pepper with a full page of quotations recorded by Kate on the night of the lecture. These quotes speak for themselves to Hurlbut's disgusting behavior, yet Pepper's article is amazingly devoid of any mention of the quotes. It ought to be noted in addition that Michael Medved, a nationally syndicated talk-radio host read the quotes on the air, and he too was completely, and rightly incensed by the disgusting character of this lecture-- indeed it was Medved who first called the Register asking them to do a story on the issue! Funny, Miss Pepper fails to mention that also.

ORANGE - A Santiago Canyon College student has filed a complaint against her biology teacher over a lecture on human genitalia that she found offensive and inappropriate.

Orange resident Katherine Davis, 17, said she felt the lecture -- in company with what she described as slides of the teacher's friends -- was delivered in a flip manner and included unnecessary descriptions of genitalia, sexual responses and topics such as the location of G-spots and "other things I felt we didn't need to know."

"We were supposed to be learning about chromosomal defects," Davis said.

Teacher Diana Hurlbut said she had begun the course's tour of the human body with sexual anatomy.

~~~What Hurlbut here calls "sexual anatomy" is nothing but euphemism! The topic was sexual practice, and perverse discussions utilizing one's sexual anatomy.~~~

She said Davis had misunderstood; the slides -- which she had not taken -- were not of friends but of acquaintances who had agreed to be photographed for educational purposes. She said she uses the slides to augment illustrations found in textbooks.

~~~Here, another direct lie from the mouth of Hurlbut. Hurlbut claimed clearly that these people were her friends who were "open about their sexuality." Also, as noted above, Professor Hurlbut even joked about the potentiality that one could interpret these pictures as pornographic. Funny that Pepper doesn't mention that here.~~~

"Students come in with lots of myths and assumptions about their bodies, and part of my job is to address those myths," Hurlbut said. " ... A G-spot is a blood plexus, and science doesn't know why pressure on these plexuses causes an orgasm," said Hurlbut, also of Orange. "That was the discussion."

~~~Where is the explanation of Hurlbut's "discussion" of the volume and type of sounds that a women will make with a certain type of "g-spot"? And where is the "scientific value" in that? Why did Pepper fail to mention the "scientific" discussion of measuring a penis with your hand? Where's Pepper's mention of Hurlbut's comments on hermaphrodites? Notice Pepper fails once again to bring out the REAL problem.~~~

Hurlbut, who said she holds a doctorate in neuropharmacology and toxicology, said she conducts the course in a professional manner.

~~~Professor Hurlbut must consider "professional" to be defined by the rank of her degrees, rather than by the morality of her community. Tell me who would approve of their tax money being used to pay the paycheck of a professor discussing such things as "drinking grapefruit juice to alter the taste of semen" with a classroom including persons as young as 16 and 17 years of age? If Professor Hurlbut had to give that same lecture to a Church congregation, do you think her confidence in the lecture's "professionality" would stand? Do you think she would not alter some of her speech? Do you think she would be completely comfortable? Ought not the same standards apply in the classroom funded by taxpayer dollars? I think they ought. The truth of the matter is her discussion was anything BUT professional, and this reporter is doing everything possible to avoid THAT truth.~~~

She said she also tries to create an informal atmosphere so students will feel comfortable asking questions.

None of the other 42 students enrolled has complained, said Rancho Santiago Community College District spokeswoman Joan Barnes.

~~~It is common sense that just because opposition isn't voiced does not mean there is no opposition! If it were not for Katherine's courage none of this would have gotten out. In fact, Pepper's "attempt" to talk to some of the students was downright insousciant: Pepper didn't even ask the entire class what they thought! What happened to the journalism of the muck-rakers in the twenties? Pepper is a disgrace to journalism and journalists everywhere who care about truth in reporting.
Further, are we to decide what behavior is appropriate by how many or who complains? Should we just carry on, plowing forward until there is complaint? Or rather ought we look to common standards of decency and morality (perhaps taught in church on sunday) for our standard of behavior?-- I know how I would answer. Moreover, of the 42 students enrolled in the course very few attend lecture. In fact, Kate has said on numerous occasions that only about 20-25 students show up. So obviously if there isn't a proper attendence, showing respect and interest in the course, there isn't going to be much enthusiam for a particular lecture, perverse or not. In short, this number of 42 students is intended to mislead the reader into thinking that Kate is a lone "conservative radical" when in fact she is one of about 20 who did formally complain-- this makes it much more plausible that there was at least one other who did not approve of the content.~~~

"This teacher has taught in the district for six years and is an accomplished, recognized instructor," Barnes said.

~~~Accomplished? Recognized? What does this have to do with the morality of teaching a lecture so perverse? How does this speak at all to the issue of Hurlbut's credibilty as a taxpayer funded teacher? In those six years how many other students have been subjected to such pornographic material, and merely suffered in silence, rather than take some initiate as Kate has done? Are we to understand that teaching for six years and being "recognized" is sufficient for moral immunity? Is Hurlbut beyond reproof because she's "accomplished"? The logic of Reporter Pepper is absurd-- downright pathetic.~~~

Administrators hope to resolve the matter in a meeting with Davis and Hurlbut, Barnes said.

~~~Yes, they want to shut Kate up behind closed doors, rather than face any real consequences of Hurlbut's actions. How different the reaction would be if at least SOME of the quotes were printed. But Pepper chose to censor Katherine Davis, and as a result Barnes and the School District want to handle things "indoors." I am sickened!~~~

Davis said that except for the one lecture, she was pleased with the class.

"If this lecture was eliminated I'd be satisfied," she said, "if I could be sure it wouldn't happen again."

~~~Evidently, Kate will have no such assurance. For it seems Hurlbut did nothing wrong, afterall, all 42 other students didn't even complain! The sad thing is, is if this dies here we can be sure that next year Professor Hurlbut will do exactly the same thing; she'll bring out the same pictures (unless she takes some new ones), she'll talk of the same perverse things, and others will suffer. Indeed, after this Hurlbut may feel more inspired and more validated-- I would not be surprised if the content in her lectures increase in profanity and vulgarity, afterall, what's to stop her?~~~

A Degree in the making

As my graduation approaches ever so quickly, I have been thinking more and more about education and what it all means. Is a degree a result of tenacity? Is it diligence? Is it a sign of intelligence, or mere book smarts? In what ways are we properly measured by our educational history?

I was talking with my roomate earlier today, and he told me an opinion of his that is not at all uncommon in the universtities. He said that his classes were all a waste of time and he wasn't even sure why he had to take them. He went on to say that he looked at the university as a necessary "hurdle" in order to make more money in the future. I told him that I have a much different take; I explained that I have, by and large, really enjoyed my major of study, and that I have gained much from just about every one of my courses. This prompted me to take a look at just what I have studied at some length in the course of my "college" life. Though in only a very small way do these courses tell of my education, I do believe they are helpful to look upon. My education, my choice of coursework, has been focused on philosophical/historical endeavor and inquiry; I would not choose any other form of informative advancement. I have learned about foundational truth; I have learned of presuppositions, and transcendental reality, upon which ALL other things are based either metaphysically or epistemologically. It is also true that EVERY aspect of life is either directly or indirectly related to Philosophy (capital "P"), i.e., God's truth: true religion. This, in part, is my pride of philosophy, and my gratitude for having been able to experience the love of knowledge in other brilliant minds.
