A Milestone and a Question

Arien took her first steps last night! She only walked about 3 steps between two chairs, but she did it without holding on to anything and she didn't fall. She's done it twice so far today, but she still hasn't gotten up the nerve to try walking any farther than that. I'm so proud of her!

Now for the question. Last Friday, Wayne and Dapne stole their neighbor's brand new carseat, took it to WalMart and got the money for it. I know this because the people they stole it from came to my house and told me that they took at warrant out on Daphne and the last time they saw them, the cops were chasing them through Kimball. Today, I noticed that I had a child support check coming for the exact amount that the car seat cost. I know it's the money they stole from these people, and I know that these people don't have much money at all, plus they have a new baby and an older kid. I've been thinking about taking the money back to them as soon as I get the check, but I'm not really sure. I don't like to think about taking the stolen money, but at the same time I need that money for the kids. What little I make isn't enough anymore, and Wayne hardly ever pays his child support. What would you do in this situation? I need some advice. Posted by sabrina at November 5, 2003 07:48 PM | TrackBack

hrm, a moral dilema. You need the money for your kids. Their dad stole something, broke the law to pay for your kids. How does this make it your responsibility to give these people the money? He will be arrested and thrown injail and have to go to court, pay restitution etc etc. If it bothers you, you could go to them and offer to give them the money. They know it is not your fault, you didn't steal it. They might refuse it because they know you didn't do it. Good luck with this one girl **hugs**
My kids said, offer them half of your check because you both need it and you feel bad about what your ex did but you need some of that child support too.

Let his butt rot in jail, after the cops arrest him for theft. I doubt seriously it will be petty larceny, so maybe if you're lucky he'll get a few months in the slammer and you won't have to worry about what he's going to do next to be able to pay your child support.

Tell you what g/f... if he was in Missouri, he'd be picking up trash on the side of the Interstate, streets & roads. They don't let the BAD BOYS, just set around eatin' grub, watchin' TV, playin' cards & shootin' sh*t, when they're behind bars here!!

YOU had NOTHING to do with Wayne's decision or part, in taking the car seat. And isn't it just a conincidence that it's the same amount as your child support check. That's pretty lame on his part, but then again... so was the theft and thinking he wouldn't get caught. (rolls eyes)

I'd stay out of the situation with the neighbor's (people he stole from), because then it's like you are an accessory to the fact. You are in a sense admitting it.

It's a catch-22, and I know how you feel about them not having any more than you do, and wanting to HELP them out, but g/f... you can't always go around worrying about other people not having anything, when you have yourself & your kids to worry about first. :)

Let the cops/law take care of the situation. They'll make Wayne or whomever is responsible for the theft... make restitution and you'll get your child support. One way or the other, it looks like to me... dear Wayne will be looking out from behind bars. And you know something... sounds like he damn well deserves it!

As Kat said... Good luck!! Be careful Sabrina! (hugs)

Hmm... I don't know. Maybe call the cops who are working on the case and tell them what has happened. You have to remember that you kids come first... I know where you are coming from though. Hang in there!

Thats a tough situation. I'd probably explain the situation to them and possibly split the check with them? It is their money, but Wayne should have to pay it back instead of you. And if you do give it back, you can't make Wayne pay you for more. I would wait to see if Wayne would replace the car seat or give them the money for it before I gave up the money.

How exciting about the baby steps!!!!

How sad about the money/car seat situation. I guess I would just let the law take care of it with him ..... ugh! I dunno .. hang in there ....

He does not seem to me to be a free man who does not sometimes do nothing.
