A true problem for the Orthodox Church?
It has been brought to my attention by a friendly, though hostile roomate (hostile to Orthodoxy), that the East has no greater claim to being the "true church" than Rome has, since, according to my roomate's argument, when the East and West split over the Filioque issue, BOTH claimed Apostolic Authority and BOTH used Scripture and Tradition to levy their respective arguments. "So who is right?" asks my roomate. "Who has the stronger claim to 'the true tradition and teachings of the Apostles'?"
I threw some rebuttals his way, but I was not totally satisfied with my response. This issue will occupy my mind until I have a concisely persuasive response.
