The Protestant historian Philip Schaff says in the second volume of his acclaimed eight volume History of the Christian Church,
The church of the second and third centuries is a legitimate continuation of that of the primitive age...it is distinguished for conscientious fidelity in preserving and propagating the sacred writings and traditions of the apostles...This is interesting since Schaff would seem to have motive to downplay the accurate transmission of apostolic teaching to the successive generations, especially since he, as a Sola Scriptura Protestant, will later want to argue the church eventually started to get many things wrong.
