Brainstorming

Here are some ideas I've come up with while brainstorming for the past few days. All of these have the [name]Consulting.com domain available, but I haven't done any trademark searches. Two that use a made-up word actually have the whole domain available.

Any of these sound appealing?

Cygwyn

I like Cygwyn. It looks Gaelic. But I think there's already a computer program that bears that name.

True. Cygwin is a set of APIs for developing and porting UNIX/LINUX apps to Windows. I'm sure it's trademarked, but its target market might be different enough to sidestep the problem. Also, it's an open source project and there isn't a monster company behind it with lawyers perched and ready to tear out my sole proprietor heart. I'm considering some variations on the theme. Cyngyn, Cygware, Cymbiot (which might have trouble with Symbiot Security), and Genuwyn come to mind. All of those have the www.[name].com domain available, which makes them more appealing than the [name]consulting.com varieties.

Hmm... not sure what you're trying to say about your self? What do you want to say? Or do you just want your name to be memorable.

I like Genuwyn. It says something, is easy to remember, and stands out.

Little tip also, have you checked out RentaCoder.com. It's a nice way to find some business on the side, just to get going.

Actually, Cygwin is owned by Red Hat. While they are not Micro$oft and probably not sue-happy, I'd stay away from that name to avoid any potential problems. However, that would be plenty of free advertising if you got sued.

Details schmetails. I agree. I had already decided not to go down that road, and I actually like some of the other alternatives as much or better.

In answer to Mark, I'm not really too concerned about the name saying something about myself, other than, perhaps, that I have the creativity to come up with a cool, memorable name. More importantly, I'd like to have a cool, memorable name.

Steer clear of 'consulting' or 'consultant' in your title, as it carries some negative
baggage w/perspective clients who have been overcharged by same in the past.
'Afterburn'? Does this suggest you've left their system in a smoldering heap? 'Afterglow' might suggest a more positive image.

'Scorpion' ?, I don't think so - you need repeat business.
'COMP-U-RAMA Systems',
'DLH Systems, LLC', 'WeDoWindows, LLC', 'SnorkMania', 'Snerds, LLC', and
'PAMQ Systems Inc.' are all pretty catchy names. Actually I really like 'Snap Systems, LLC' snapsys.com, etc.

I very much agree with MKenyon - it does matter very much what you convey in your name. Genuwyn is clever enough to stick, and says something positive. You don't want lawsuits to complicate things, but you should care very much what your name conveys about you! Remember the guy I was bidding against for the American Standard Bible? He was bidding under the userID of slipknotweasel. And, what's the first thing I said about him? He's obviously not a brother! Who do you represent? Don't forget it. (What are parents for?) Another idea to try is foreign words composed of letter configurations that are familiar to English. Similar to our cat's being named Sakhi. (friend in the hindi language) Try words like "confidence", "trustworthy", and "reliable", etc. in a variety of languages, and you might come up with something unique and "cool" that means something good - like YOUR name....

Of course I was just brainstorming and wasn't seriously considering all those names, just tossing out ideas to generate feedback, which I got, thank you. Also, I must have tried five times the number shown here where the domain was already taken, like snapsys.com. Thanks too for the feedback on having "Comsulting" in the name. I hadn't considered the possible drawbacks, and it seemed like a natural thing. At the moment, I'm leaning toward Genuwyn Systems, LLC. I grabbed the domain (genuwyn.com) for $6, but unfortunately the trademark is $335. Ouch. I think I'll hold off on that for the moment.

nice. I like genuwyn. It doesn't sound like a dotcom and that's good.
