I've heard it said that you can't have a long conversation with someone in my generation without hearing at least one reference to a Seinfeld episode...not that there's anything wrong with that. Of course there are lots of shows that have influenced us (for better or for worse), like Friends and The Simpsons...no big surprise. But the one that always cracks me up is Saved by the Bell. It's the show that no one quotes regularly, but if it's ever brought up in a conversation, most people under thirty can join the conversation, no matter which episode is being discussed. Come on, admit it: you know what I mean when I refer to "a Zack Morris cell phone." If I started singing, "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it," you know you'd be thinking about the episode where Jessie got addicted to caffeine pills. Admit it: you loved Zack Morris, too.
Posted by christin at February 19, 2004 09:37 AM | TrackBacki admit it freely. plus, i used to watch reruns of the high school AND college year(s) when i myself was in college...you know, when i actually had free time in the afternoons, though i should have been studying:)
Posted by: UJ at February 19, 2004 09:45 AMI think we can all say how much the reunion meant to us, when Zack and Kelly got married. I would SO watch that right now if it was on.
Posted by: Shannon at February 19, 2004 10:41 AM...and I just can't hide it..." (breaks down into tears uncontrollably)..."Hi my name is Sarah, and I love Zack Morris." "Hi Sarah." Yes, I too was a SBTB junkie. The new class was never as good as the original stuff...
Posted by: Sarah at February 19, 2004 10:42 AM"I'm so excited! I'm so...scared."
Posted by: Christin at February 19, 2004 10:56 AMThere is no denial here. In fact, I still watch it occasionally. Someone kicked TBS in the pants and they began showing it at noon AND 1230. So about once a week I get a good dose of SBTB. Sad, eh? Right now the toga party episode where Zach wrecks the Turtle's mercedes is on....
Posted by: Honi at February 19, 2004 11:40 AMWe weren't allowed to watch Saved by the Bell (big surprise). So I had to watch it on the sly, one episode every month or so while the parentals were otherwise engaged. And the episode I caught was ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS the one where Jessie has a "drug problem".
Posted by: Micah at February 19, 2004 01:29 PMI've seen about two snipets of SBTB episodes years back, a few simpsons, NO FRIENDS egad, and I know more of seinfeld from people talking about it than from ever watching it. I am an outcast, the only american who spends 0% of his day watching tv.
Not to imply I'm better than you inferior boob-tube slaves or anything...
;P
Posted by: Gray at February 19, 2004 02:58 PMRemember the season (or was it just several episodes) where the whole gang worked at that Beach Resort place? And I think Jesse's dad was getting married out there or something? (I was usually too busy focusing on those sweet pleated jeans that Slater always wore).
Anyway, the daughter of their balding, cigar-chomping boss is now on that show "King of Queens" which is hilarious, and features Jerry Stiller of - you guessed it - Seinfeld fame. You're right, Christin - it's weird how that works, huh?
Saved by the Bell for my generation was Welcome Back Kotter. Am I really such a geezer?
Posted by: Rus at February 19, 2004 08:10 PMDid you know that Dustin Diamond, who played Screech, is the brother of The Beastie Boys' Michael Diamond?
Posted by: Amy at February 20, 2004 09:33 AMYou just blew my mind.
Posted by: Christin at February 20, 2004 09:46 AMI still watch SBTB reruns when I can catch them ... recently seeing the Zack/Kelly wedding. Love, love, love the original cast.
Posted by: dawn at February 20, 2004 10:52 AMI once knew a guy who called any pants with an elastic waist band 'A.C. Slader pants'. Eventually I had to quit wearing them.
Posted by: Patrick at February 20, 2004 11:06 AMYou mention Saved by the Bell and people start coming out of the woodworks to comment (that would be me!) I stand firm in my belief that every occurance in life can somehow be related to a Saved by the Bell episode. One of my personal favorites is the one which was a dream sequence in that they were all in a band. I still catch myself humming their hit, "Friends till the end" every now and then.
