they date jerks b/c jerks happen to be "cool" and jerks will usually do R-rated stuff nice guys tend not to. and I bet the girls dads are jerks too, so they dont know any better. very sad.

They are usually going after what they can relate to, so the comment about their dads by bobw is probably right on.

Actually, I happen to have dated some jerks. They start out to be fun and interesting guys, and then they change back into their original forms. The jerks we date are not usually jerks to begin with, they are nice guys, they make us like them, and then they morph into Mr. Suck. If that's any help :)

While girls don't like to admit it, if a guy is jerk that guy comes off as being tuff and dominating, something that girls still tend to look for. Girls still want to have a "man" someone to protect them from the other "men". Nice guys come off as being weak and friendly instead of strong and protective. And girls are still trying to find someone to protect them instead of protecting themselves. So if you want a girl heres my advice, be a jerk to start off. Not to the girls, but to other guys when the girl you are intrested is around. But when dealing with that girl, be sweet and respectful. If you don't believe me, ask my girlfriend.

Hmmm... I think it's that guys who are just naturally jerks hide that part of themseles and pretend to be Prince Charming in the beginning... to win the lass... and once her heart is irrevocably his... the facade falls away... and the toad shines through...

At least that's been my limited experience... that guys I thought were wonderful in the beginning... definitely changed spots a month or two into the relationship...

Alright, serious answer. I think most girls like a man/guy who's strong, brave, and a little reckless. Lots of jerks fit the bill and lots of shy, careful, panzy guys don't. That's my view of harsh reality, adapted from "Wild at Heart". Read it, Megs. It'll be good for you.
