Apparently the NYT--as is being reported and analyzed all over the web--is today putting out an article that is intended to make Bush look like an idiot: U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Primer. In other words: Iraq had so much information regarding nuclear weapons, that materials documenting that, put on the web, would be enough for some rogue nation (stage whisper: Iran) to use to put the finishing touches on its own nuclear program. The website, by the way, has been taking down.
Yep. That Bush is an idiot alright. (Insert Homer Simpsoneque: D'oh!)
Or, maybe it's a bit of Karl Rove (cue: Darth Vader breathing apparatus) strategery. After all, look what the Times actually admits in the article (emphasis added):
Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq had abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Hussein’s scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.
Wh--!?!
Hasn't the NYT's mantra for the past three years been: There were no WMDs. Iraq was not a threat.
So . . . apparently, a nation one year away from nuclear weapon capability led by that picture of sane humanitarianism himself, Saddam Hussein (who was never known to unleash horrifying weapons against people he didn't like). . . was not a threat?
You know, sometimes ya gotta feel sorry for the ol' NYT. They mean so well and all, you know, taking down the Bush administration for the betterment of mankind. But geeze can they be any stupider?
I'm convinced. It's not Bush's disarming bumpkinness, nor is it Rove's evil genius architectonics. It's much more simple: Bush's opponents couldn't find their backsides with both hands.
It will be interesting to see how this October, er, November, surprise, four days before the election plays out. Methinks it will do little more than expel some impotent mental flatulence.

Good morning! ;-)
" Other developments were not encouraging, such as the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad, the fact that we did not find stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction, and the continued loss of some of America's finest sons and daughters."

Nope...and as I recall most (maybe all?) of the democrats who voted for the war have also admitted it.
However, I think you missed Clifton's point: Bush might be right...if Iraq was working toward nukes, Saddam needed to go "bye bye."
The other interesting point is how the NYT (of all media outlets) is concerned about giving away secret or dangerous info out to terrorists????? Since when?
Anyone see their well hidden regrets for spilling the beans on the banking surveillance program?
Posted by: jamesofthenorthwest at November 3, 2006 12:11 PMLet me separate myself from the usual liberal rabble around here. Heh. Is that possible?
W is no more or less culpable for the intelligence debacle than anyone else in DC...this includes the liberals. And I understood that Iraq was working toward nukes for the last decade or more. This was no great secret...or maybe I missed something...I dunno. That particular piece of information was not news to me. Iran, Lybia, Israel, South Africa, N. Korea, and other nations have been after the Bomb for a long time. Some have succeeded. Some have not. What troubles me is that we see this endeavor as an opportunity to invade the country. We should, by extrapolation, be invading all of the above countries...especially N Korea. Israel, an ally, should be policed as well. As an ally, they are not likely to attack us...but as a country surrounded by enemies they are perhaps more likely to be tempted to use "dirty" weapons and short range nukes than anyone.
I am circling the airport. I know. But I simply think that W cannot claim any sort of special insight...there is little or no room to claim a high ground. None of us have that particular claim. It is a great sadness to me that we, as a nation, have entered this war and are now compelled to finish it. For, honestly, it will likely finish us.
Thus endeth the melodrama. ;-)
