So we reminisced about the Anne movies for a while on Saturday night, and in continuation of that grain of thought I have re-watched Anne of Avonlea and reread Anne's House of Dreams. While I still hold Gil in the highest respect, I must state that Anne kind of annoys me now. She waxes poetic a little much. One could almost mistake her for Madeline Bassett, who thought the stars were God's daisy chain.
Posted by sopharcules at September 25, 2003 08:21 AMMy wife is a big Anne of PEI fan, and having 3 sisters I grew up watching the films and hearing about the books (which I never touched, my Dad and I read tom clancy novels instead).
So anyways, April (my wife) and I talked about about Anne's "waxing poetic" as you called it. (actually, we talked about it alot on our honeymoon, part of which we spent on PEI). I always found Anne annoying when I was young, and found her even more annoying now.
But I guess April's point was there's something to being able to appreciate the silly pretentiousnes of Anne, that that element about her is a central conceit to the entire story which I hear is from youth all the way to old age. You get to see later on how "life" brings her down to earth a bit.
Anyways, I've certainly been able to watch them (A couple parts come on PBS a few weeks back) recently and not have the snot annoyed out of me.
Posted by: JosiahQ at September 25, 2003 09:25 AMI watched the movies repeatedly as a kid (mostly at the behest of my sister) and mainly recall the brillance of Richard Farnsworth as Matthew Cuthbert. Matthew's death still gets to me.
Posted by: mesh at September 25, 2003 10:18 AMThough I see what you mean about Anne's pretentions, I think that's one of the things that's endearing about her...not that I'd want to be around someone like that in real life, but I still never get tired of that movie.
Posted by: Christin at September 25, 2003 10:47 AMI think that Anne would have made a good companion for George Grant. She could have waxed poetic with all of the large words in his books.
"The tumultuous ardour of the man was his bain,
He never looked twice or read Mark Twain."
Anon.

Posted by: Micah at September 25, 2003 04:07 PMThe books were much better than the movies!! She is pretentious and absurd, but in the books it's just funny and silly and not as annoying.
Of all of Mongomery's heroines, Anne is one of my least favorite. There's also Emily, who is more complex than Anne. And Jane, who grew up away from PEI and who grew to love it. And Pat, who loves her home so much that she just doesn't want to leave it.
And my favorite Montgomery book is _The Blue Castle_, Montgomery's only book that was not set on PEI, and in which is really funny characterization, an interesting plot, and really pretty prose. She does a good job describing how pretty Canada is--and how much she loves Canada.

Posted by: Amy at September 26, 2003 09:27 AMI owned every book from that series and read and reread all of them until the pages were tattered and worn. I wanted red hair. I wanted a best friend named Diane. I wanted to spell my name ANN with an E. A few months ago I came across the first of the series and read it. I wish I would not have. "She waxes poetic a little much." Perfect way of putting it. I was so disappointed that I did not find it as wonderful as I did as a child. It is one of those sweet childhood memories that is now tainted because of my practical "get to the point because I have things to do" mind. I am ashamed it has come to this.
Posted by: ashley at September 26, 2003 10:15 AMWith all her flaws- I love Anne. I was completely taken in as a child and I still love the story as an adult. I've never been annoyed with Anne - only giggled at her "waxing poet" nature. I found it refreshingly different. I also rented the series about a month ago and only got to watch the first part. I need to go the Library and rent the second half- but, I've been holding off because I now have a late fee on my account because I kept the first part of the series too long. Oops!
Posted by: Lisa Huntington at September 29, 2003 05:08 PMMy college roomate and I used to get together just to watch these shows...I can't imagine why now...but, we would have a box of tissues and a "pajama day" and spend hours watching. I have not seen these movies in many, many years. My daughter has NO interest at all. I can not imagine wanting to see these movies, let alone making a day of it!
