On Wednesday night at 11pm (EST), I proposed to Heidi. We Had just gotten home from a Wally-world shopping trip and had just finished putting everything away. She gave me a big hug and I told her I had something for her. I pulled out a nice little box and opened it up in front of her. She looked at me, and then looked down to find a diamond ring waiting for her. I figured she would start crying (happy tears of course), but no, I was waaaay off. Heidi started screaming... and screaming... and screaming. I thought for sure that someone was going to call the police on us (these weren't quiet screams... they were more of the blood-curdling persuasion). Fortunately the police never showed up, and heidi eventually stopped screaming. In the meantime though, after the initial scream heidi takes another look at me and the diamond and starts running (ok, so her apartment really isnt big enough to actually run in... it was more like a skiddattle). She scurried over in the general direction of the door, and I thought 'great, im going to have to chase her down', but fortunately she stopped at the door, turned around and faced the corner for a minute (screaming is still taking place...). I finally made it over to her (my moving seemed to make her scream even louder, so I tried to avoid any sudden movements). I dropped to my knee(s) and waited for the screaming to finish. She stopped momentarily after a minute, and quickly bounced up and down before jumping at me saying 'YES, YES, YES!!! NO WAIT, YOU HAVE TO ASK FIRST!!!'. So I waited a tad longer (for her to shuush), and proposed to her. I of course was welcomed with a big hug and an excited 'YES!'.
Next stop in the road of life, marriage!
Hilarious story. Congratulations!
Posted by: andy at December 1, 2003 09:10 AMawesome. marriage is great. short engagements are highly recommended.
your post-walmart proposal seems strangely 21st century. no flowers, candles, etc? I guess some folks dont dig on that stuff ;-)
Posted by: bobw at December 1, 2003 09:35 AMYes, it was quite hilarious! It was also the most involuntary act I have ever done-it was a mixture of total shock and pure excitement. I am sure I will never live this one down! :)
Posted by: Heidi at December 1, 2003 11:16 AMYeah, she had been waiting on this for a couple months or two, and since I live 9hrs away, anything slightly romantic would have been a clear indication that the proposal was coming. I pretty much had to pick a normal time, near a normal event to maintain the surprise. *Fortunately* heidi provided us with a memorable reaction.
Posted by: kposey at December 1, 2003 02:25 PMCongratulations! Awesome news. And I would definitely recommend the short engagement. Genia and I were engaged for 11 months and it seemed like forever!
Posted by: John at December 1, 2003 09:45 PMI just loved that story! Those moments in life when you are just swept away with emotions are the greatest. Congrats, and I agree with John, don't wait long!
