What happened to the great morbid music of the late eighties? You know, that music that was the precurser to "death rock." I popped in the classic Smiths album Louder Than Bombs yesterday-- lyrics like
"I wear black on the outside, because black is how I feel on the inside"reminded me of just how great depressing music really is.
Here's some other fine lines from Smiths' songs of sad thought:
I know I'm unlovable; you don't have to tell me.Cheery enough for you? :-) And all those lyrics come off of ONE album! Imagine all the wrist-slitting lyrics one could amass if one threw into the collection bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Bauhaus!"Call me morbid call me pale I've spent six years of my life on your trail, and if you have five seconds to spare then I'll tell you the story of my life: Sixteen clumsy and shy; I went to London and I booked myself in at the Y.W.C.A. I said, 'I like it here. Can I stay? And do you have a vacancy for a back-scrubber?'"
Burn down the Disco. Hang the blessed DJ. Because the music they constantly play, It says nothing to me about my life. Hang the blessed DJ.
I was happy in the daze of a drunken hour, but Heaven knows I'm miserable now....In my life, why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I live or die?
The good life is out there somewhere...but I know my luck too well, and I'll probably never see you again
Will the world end in the day time? (I really don't know)
Will the world end in the night time? (I really don't know)
And is there any point ever having children? I really don't know; all I do know is we're Here and it's Now...See, the life I've had would make a good man bad. So for once in my life, let me get what I want. Lord knows it would be the first time.
Ohhh, those were the days!
Posted by at July 27, 2002 11:38 AMComing from a different album:
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.. And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh ...
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
...I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over...
And:
If you're wondering why
All the love that you long for eludes you
And people are rude and cruel to you
I'll tell you why
You just haven't earned it yet, baby....
...Today I am remembering the time
When they pulled me back
And held me down
And looked me in the eyes and said
You just haven't earned it yet, baby..
And still:
Young bones groan
And the rocks below say :
"Throw your skinny body down, son"
And then there's the song that got me hooked to Moz:
There's gonna be some trouble
A whole house will need re-building
And everyone I love in the house
Will recline on an analyst's couch quite
Soon
Your Father cracks a joke
And in the usual way
Empties the room
And last, the song that song I find the absolutely most depressing of all:
Lifeguard sleeping, Girl drowning
Always looking for attention
Always needs to be mentioned
Who does she
Think she should be ?
The shrill cry through darkening air
Doesn't she know he's
Had such a busy day ?
Tell her ... sshhh
Somebody tell her ... sshhh
Oh, no way, no way, there's no movement...
..It was only a test
But she swam too far
Against the tide
She deserves all she gets
The sky became marked with stars
As an out-stretched arm slowly
Disappears
...Please don't worry
There'll be no fuss
She was ... nobody's nothing
(What's your name ?)
(What's your name ?)
(What's your name ?)
(What's your name ?)
When he awoke
The sea was calm
And another day passes like a dream
There's no ... no way
I'm glad you can appreciate Morrissey's voice and lyrics, jeremy.
(do you like the web address?) :)
Sweetie, Thanks for posting those great lyrics! Here's a few more that come to mind:
"It's a dull world; smother me mother..."Then off of one of the greatest albums of all time, Viva Hate:Trouble loves me
trouble needs me
two things more than you do
or would attempt to...and I don't get along with myself, and I'm not too keen on anyone else...
You left your girlfriend on the platform with this really ragged notion that you'd return, but she knows that when you go, you really go...
you left your entire family grieving, and you think they're sad because you're leaving, but did you see the jealousy in eyes of the ones who had to stay behind?
LALE NIGHT, MAUDLIN STREET
The last night on Maudlin Street
goodbye house
goodbye stairs
I was born here
I was raised here, and
...I took some stick here
love at first sight
may sound trite
but it's true, you know
I could list the details
of everything you ever wore
or said, or how you stood that day
and as we spend the last night
on Maudlin Street, I say
"goodbye house-forever!"
I never stole a happy hour
around here
Where the world's ugliest boy
became what you see
here I am - the ugliest man
Its the last night on Maudlin Street
and truly I do love you
oh, truly I do love you
When I sleep with that picture of
you framed beside my bed
oh, it's childish and it's silly
but I think it's you in my room
by the bed (...yes, I told you it was silly...)
and I know
I took strange pills
but I never meant to hurt you
oh truly I love you
I came home late one night
everyone had gone to bed
nobody stays up for you
when you have sixteen stitches
all around your head
the last buss I missed to Maudlin Street
so, he drove me home in the Van
complaining: "Women only like me for my mind..."
don't leave your torch behind
power-cuts ahead
as we crept through the park
but no I cannot steal a pair of jeans
off a clothesline for you
but you...without clothes
oh I could not keep a straight face
me - without clothes?
well a nation turns its back and gags...
I'm packed
I am moving house
a half-life disappears today
every slag waves me on
(secretly wishing me gone
well, I will be soon
oh - I will be soon)
There were bad times on Maudlin Street
when they took you away in a police car
dear Inspector - don't you know?
don't you care?
don't you know - about Love?
Your gran died
and your mother died
on Maudlin Street
in pain and ashamed
with never time to say
those special things
I took the keys from Maudlin Street
well, it's only bricks and mortar!
and...truly I do love you
wherever you are
wherever you areI find it a wonderful thing, sweetie, to be able to share my love of music with you.
Louder than Bombs is one of my top five favorite albums of all time.
I don't know why, but I feel cheerful after listening to that album instead of depressed. Maybe it's b/c it's such awesome music.
Posted by: Hechung Chong at July 29, 2002 06:51 PMHechung, I know exaclty what you mean-- the music is so awesome, and the lyrics so powerful that there isn't anything but positive emotions brought forth upon listening to such music.
Louder Than Bombs is in my "top ten."
I'm curious, what's your top five?
Posted by: jeremy at July 29, 2002 07:06 PMThis changes, hmmm, about once every couple of months or so but here goes my top five of the moment in no particular order.
The Smiths-Louder than Bombs
Elliott Smith-XO
Tracy Chapman-Tracy Chapman
Pete Yorn-musicforthemorningafter
The Be Good Tanyas-Blue Horse
That was hard. I'm certain I'm forgetting some old favorites of mine, and there is a lot of new music out there too! What are your top five of the moment?
Kind of off topic but, have you been to Amoeba in Hollywood? Mike works across the street from there. It is the best music store around here. The used cd selection is huge. They have records and just music music galore! I gotta go there soon...
Posted by: Hechung at July 29, 2002 09:47 PMThanks for the response; your list is very eclectic; I appreciate that.
Thanks for the tip on the music store in L.A. When Kate and I actually get some money I think her and I are going to make a trip up there; it's been a long time since she or I have bought any music.
K. Painfully here's my "top five" (this isn't easy, nor perfectly accurate)
The Cure Disintegration
Depeche Mode 101
Radiohead OK Computer

Ray Charles Ingredients in a Recipe for Soul

Posted by: Katherine at July 31, 2002 04:31 PMHechung, did you get my email? I emailed you about two months ago and never heard back from you...
Posted by: Katherine at July 31, 2002 04:31 PMJeremy-I know, it was so hard to pick five. A lot of the ones you picked are my favorites too.
I'm trying to cut down on buying things like music and all that other stuff I don't absolutely need at the moment. It's so hard!
Kate-I'm pretty certain I didn't receive an email from you two months ago. What's up? Can you send it to me again? How are you doing? I hear you're in school. How is that going?
Posted by: Hechung at August 2, 2002 05:21 PMHechung,
I might have the wrong address although I used the same one I did before...
But in any case, what is your address?
