So, I like to drool... over computer crap. Its the materialist in me that I often encounter, wrestle with, and suppress only to have it resurface a few weeks later. I've been cruising the used mac world on the web and I must say the computer I really want is this:

I realize its old and out of date, but I'm sorry the new Imac is not as good looking to me as the old one. I love this design, have since I first saw it. It just speaks to me in a suttle tone that the other one doesn't. The new one is just too much like a tv for me, I like my computer to look like a computer and my tv to look like a tv. I don't want the two blended. Its too metroelectronical... blurs the lines between tv and computer (that's a play on the term metrosexual: a person who blurs the line between strait and homosexual).
So i've scoured the used world, found some good stores that offer warranties plus what I want. I wish Mac wouldn't throw the bath water out with the baby when they redesign every new computer they have. I mean upgrade to the G5 but keep the old body style... some of us aren't used to this much change!!!!
I don't know if I'd ever get one, I mean its already out of date, but basically I want a mac for my music, pictures, and internet which I think the G4 would be fine for. Those three things are pretty much all I use my current comp for, but the viruses and general PCness of it seem to make it age rapidly overtime. I mean I don't even think I need a P4, as my p3 still works fine for me. But what I'd probably do with my old computer is reformat it and turn it into a game machine that ran older games that took me back to my college years.
Also two other things I want from the mac world:

So I don't have to crawl under my desk to plug the shuffle in and this

which is the FM transmitter for the shuffle slash charger for your car which is pretty cool.
But as the title states, these are mac dreams.
Posted by holtonian at April 28, 2005 08:36 PM | TrackBackI know you still wouldn't buy it, but I think that Apple kind of missed the boat with the new iMac. They should have included a built in TV tuner, which would have really sold it as a lifestyle device. Just think, you could put one in every room (well, only if you're rich)! But still, it would be the first computer that I would not be embarrased to have sitting out in my living room.
What if Apple had designed the G4 to have interchangable monitors? You could upgrade to a bigger one just by plunking it in the hole.
Posted by: Scott at April 28, 2005 09:05 PMI think you can use any old USB cable to ease the hook up. I've been told that the FM transmitter is kinda fuzzy. But if you don't have a tape player, I guess that's all you can do, assuming there's no input hole on your car stereo.
When did I start caring about this? Weird.
Posted by: Nat at April 29, 2005 08:15 AMYou could just put linux on your P3 and it'll start acting very MAC like (or mabey MAC acts linux-like).
Anyways its pretty great if all you want it for is pictures music and internet. www.ubuntulinux.org
I got a G3 from like way back and its pretty sweet. way out of date but it runs OS X pretty well its just a music player anyways. but I'm posting this comment from it so mabey its more.

why do you talk about industrial design? WHY?!?! WHY?!?!
Congrats, you're one of the 3 people on the planet who think the old G4 iMac is better than the new G5 iMac. And its not even about being better, its about an evolution in design, and coalescing of technology and form.
blaugh
Posted by: JosiahQ at April 29, 2005 10:57 AMI already tore josiah apart for his stupid post via email. If he would read my posts, he would know that I merely am talking about the looks of the computer, which despite his best efforts is still a matter of subjective opinion and not the word according to Roe. I understand the g5 is better in almost everyway but for a novice computer user like myself a g4 would do just as good for my uses as a g5. For that matter a dell would too, though I'd rather go the mac route for security reasons.
Posted by: holton at April 30, 2005 08:53 AMI have an Itronix Go Book II.
