2 Year Tour of Duty

Unless something desperate happens, I will be here at least 2 years.

Strange to think that if I am somewhere else in 2 years, beginning a new school year, getting to know a new school and new methods, getting to know another city, that I will be looking at my 26th birthday.

I thought about that this morning while I was shopping at the Farmers' Market. I know that time marches on, but why does my 26th birthday sound old? I'll be able to rent cars (yay). But is the big deal that 26 is on the way to 30, and 30 is the first "Over the Hill" age? Any opinions?

Turning 30 was no big deal. Actually, I turned 30 in Hawaii! I flew to the Big Island to meet two of my aunts and their families--Aunt Althea and Aunt Joyce took me out to dinner, then to our house-for-the-week (in the middle of a lava field) and I was greeted with birthday-candled bagels. Our week there was good--sleeping, finding beaches, snorkeling, cooking for each other, having some long talks.

Maybe turning 30 is more of a milestone for women than men.

I felt that I was coming to a new sort of maturity, feeling like I had enough presence of mind to let go of things that didn't matter, especially relationships that weren't ever gonna get any better. I think that the last three years have also been a time of embracing the things that really matter to me--friends and family.

Ok, I would write more, but I am home from Charlotte and in great need of a nap!
