Here are things I feel I need to buy when I get to Hawaii. My apartment is furnished (furniture, dishes, silverware, pots and pans), so this list is just stuff that I need to see if I need to buy.
Food/Kitchen supplies
Any other ideas? Anything I am missing?

Posted by: Jeannette at August 5, 2003 12:10 PMNah. If you have a good lid on things, bugs shouldn't get into it. I've been using my liter since Nov. I have about a third left. Speaking of roaches...you might want to add a can of Raid to your list. Living in a tropical climate, they are an inevitable presence, esp. in the summer. You can clean and lay out poison all you want, but they still manage to trot their little butts into your house. Odious creatures!!! Ugh!
Posted by: Jeannette at August 5, 2003 12:10 PMThanks for the advice, Jeannette. I have to add ice cube trays (for broth) and a lamp of some sort. I do not like glaring light...give me 4 gentle lamps over one ugly fluorescent light. Ugh.
I do have good knives. One of them I used at a teachers' potluck, and one of the ladies said, "You could ride to Boston on this knife." I like it...you have to sharpen it a lot, but it's my ride to Hilo knife, haha. I have 2 super paring knives and a lovely bread knife (it's the Devil Knife), and good measuring cups and spoons. I do need to add mixing bowls to my list.
I hope there is a Sam's there. I love olive oil for frying and cooking. I'll buy it at Waltopia if I have to, but the better the price...the better. Does it ever go rancid? Can roaches or other bugs get in it? (eew, I had that nightmare about roaches.)
Posted by: Krista at August 5, 2003 02:07 AMget corn, not canola oil. Also, if there is a Sam's there, and either you or someone you know has a membership, you can get a liter of extra virgin olive oil for a good price. (About the only thing I buy at S's). That is really the best oil to use.
To do meat cheaply. I buy about 4 pounds of gr beef at a time, and then when I get home I break it up into little 1/4 lb chunks, and put each chunk into a baggie, and freeze it. It's the perfect amount for a one-two person dinner. I also buy a whole chicken, roast it, pick the meat off that easy to pick off, then boil the rest the..uh..carcass and pick off hte rest of the meat and freeze the broth in little containers. Perfect for a little soup for dinner. Also on the meat front, you might find seafood there more readily available than more traditional meats. I know here in Louisiana, shrimp is like chicken...a staple. If you're like me, you might need to spend a Saturday afternoon with a church lady who can explain the mysterious world of local seafood to you...I have a wonderful reference lady in my church for that kind of thing.
do you have decent kitchen knives? worth in investing in a couple good ones...but you might want to get them there...flying might be a problem. Target has them for good prices, but I have NO idea what you'll find there.
