In all fairness, Texas women have a little something that Georgia girls lack, on the whole. Something feisty. So that might factor in. Great to see you blogging, by the way.
Posted by: mesh at June 20, 2003 09:21 AMDP,
I think the issue with Covenant girls is a couple things.
First, is has a dang large homeschooler girl population. And dangit, very rarely have I met a homeschooled girl that is well put together. And I'm not even talking about being trendy looking' here (I dont' care about that), I just mean bathing on a regular basis...
Second, since Covenant is like a big family, where everyone get's really comfortable in our own little world up on the mountain, you're less likely to worry about being fixed up all the time.
Thirdly, you were at a PARTY. Of course you get all dressed up for a party. Many of those girls are just as funky looking as some of the Covenant girls when they wake up in the morning.
Fourthly, my wife is more attractive than any of those UT chicks, and she went to Covenant.
Posted by: JosiahQ at June 20, 2003 09:44 AMAnother factor why girls at Cov don't bother:
It's not like the guys at Cov were really worth going all out for with the whole looks thing. If the girls had been more inspired, perhaps. Some of them were good-looking, BUT most of them were ass-holes in the classroom, in chapel, in the Great Hall, in the Bagpipe, and on the e-Wittenburg Door (basically all places of public discourse), that they made themselves completely undesirable. Now, of course, some happy matches are made there. I found my match elsewhere.
I think it's because we're reformed.
Posted by: matt at June 20, 2003 10:48 AMAnd of course all of the men at the University of Texas are perfect gentlemen. No assholes there, no sir.
Posted by: mesh at June 20, 2003 11:17 AMQuick question...Were you drinking at this party? If so, this 90% figure you threw out would probably drop considerably once you were sober.
Posted by: David at June 20, 2003 12:57 PMMaybe J, you were just scared of some guys with some moxy, charisma.
And honestly, all those covenant instutions you listed, the pipe, chapel, etc. Whatever "guys" wrote in there, represent about 5% of the male population at Covenant.
Posted by: JosiahQ at June 20, 2003 02:17 PMI'm not sure how many students go to Covenant, but I know it's nowhere close to UT, which has around 50,000 students. Out of 50,000 people, you're bound to have a larger-than-average population of good-looking people and Debbie Matenopoulos look-alikes.
Posted by: Christin at June 20, 2003 03:32 PMyes, covenant is 1/60 the size of utexas. however, my point is that at this party, which i take to be a representative sample of the white texas coed group since it was a pretty random gathering, all of these girls were at least average by covenant standards, and many of them were beyond any girl at covenant (looks-wise, mind you). now i would think there would be just a couple knockouts at covenant. if there were just 1/60 as many girls that looked like that at covenant compared to ut, i would be satisfied. maybe its because all the pretty girls go to the city i hope that link works.
Posted by: dp at June 20, 2003 04:43 PMClarify my comments. (I can't believe we're analyzing this topic). Of course, all of our comments when pressed become logically fallacious. And, present company excluded, of course, the kind of guy I'm thinking of was a particularly Cov kind of asshole. I'm sure you know what I mean, because you were probably equally impatient. And another point. There just wasn't any time to spend going the extra mile to dress up everyday. I worked from 8 am to midnight (the hours of the library) every day. The thought of taking a few precious moments of study away to go put on more makeup was just preposterous! And the girls at Cov are probably there because they are serious about study...not out to make some sort of social niche for themselves. And the comment about going to the city is good, too. The mountain environment doesn't really have the same pulse as say an urban campus in Philly, where "looks" matter more.
Posted by: Jeannette at June 21, 2003 11:03 AMI just think DP makes a really interesting point. I mean, guys can be assholes, but that's often mistaken for being "men" as my friend Mesh pointed out to me last night, in a discussion about the feminization of masculinity (yes, I know that sounds weird).
And further, since many men are "bashed" at Covenant for not pursuing girls more, it's assumed at Covenant that the guys are the ones doing the pursuing, so it's their perogative to or not to pursue a given girl, or any girl for example.
So I think DP was concluding that the issue is, if many girls at Covenant feel like the guys are jerks for not pursing them, odd's are it's because they aren't taking good care of themselves. Studying, sports, whatever, if you're gonna slam the guys at Covenant for being jerks for not going after a girl, then you'd better be doing your best to look well put together.
Now mind you, this isn't MY opinion, just what I think is the summation of this discusion.
Posted by: JosiahQ at June 21, 2003 12:55 PMno. without trying to show anyone up, im not talking about that at all. i dont know if yall read my "clarification" post right after "debbie" but i try to make it clear that i dont care whos trying or whos not, whos pursuing or whos not. im talking about a lack of those who dont have to try. while the points above are good ones, they arent my issue here. to be blunt: why are girls everywhere else hotter than covenant girls? -remember my criteria in "clarification"-and this is not to say that there arent any hot or pretty covenant girls because i freely admit that there are. there are just hotter girls elsewhere. there is not one girl ive seen at covenant that guys there would uniformly agree was just gorgeous whereas there are ample numbers of such women seemingly everywhere else, even chatta-vegas.
Posted by: dp at June 21, 2003 04:33 PMDP,
I can't believe you're actually telling us to get back on topic, which is, that women at Covenant are ugly. Hil-arious.
Posted by: JosiahQ at June 21, 2003 11:09 PMJosiah...lack of male pursuance doesn't count as assholishness. I could've cared less. It's hard for me to think of it to describe after two years of being removed from the Cov/Chatta community. And perhaps it's just my personal bristles. I'm thinking of guys who are so "theologically minded" and let you know it and discuss ad nauseum fine, irrelevant points, and functionally sneer at the independant thougths of their female collegeaus. But that could've just been my perception. This whole topic boils down to the fundament that all beauty is relative.
Posted by: Jeannette at June 22, 2003 12:36 AMLots of pretty girls go to RUF at UT... maybe that's the place to find a wife... Reedemer Pres has all the hot chicks.
Posted by: kristen at July 3, 2003 08:43 PMi only attend redeemer during the summer when im home so i havent seen, but ive always been curious whether there were indeed many attractive women at redeemer when ut was in session. your comment is encouraging since church would be the ideal place to meet a future wife if and when i return to austin after i graduate. but i believe this will only happen if i get into ut law school. the chance is fat on that.
Posted by: dp at July 4, 2003 01:50 AMThey have summer RUF you know... you ought to go and meet some folks! I attended UNC-Chapel Hill but I am marrying a UT/Redeemer guy (and teaching at City School in the fall). I don't know many women that well, but I did take note that there was an abundance of beauty in the Reformed ranks in Austin. Are you enjoying the various people in the pulpit this summer? How was Jeff Steel?
Posted by: kristen at July 4, 2003 10:45 AMwell this summer ive been attending the emanuel church plant so i really couldnt say. but i think i may heed your suggestion about summer ruf...i didnt know it existed.
Posted by: dp at July 7, 2003 01:17 AM"RUF? Just the way your mother likes it eh Trebek?"
