Catching Up is Hard to Do

You'll have to forgive me for not blogging more lately, but I'm pretty much madly in love with the two people in the above photo and I haven't wanted to do much else lately but spend time with them.

I'll try to play "blog catch-up" sometime on Wednesday, but here are some quick tidbits:

1. I turned 33 on Monday. Seeing as it was a press day and I was operating on two hours of sleep, it was a blur.

2. Our paper turned three last week. I wrote a little about it here.

3. I've added a few new photo albums to my (now professional grade) Flickr account. Click here to see all that I've posted thusfar. I'll try to add some captions to the pictures soon so you'll know a little more about what you're looking at.

That is all. It is 3:37 a.m. and I am still not asleep.

Samuel William Colrus is Born!

Five days after his due date, our first child, Sam, was born yesterday afternoon.

To say we're ecstatic is an understatement. Melissa did a phenomenal job, and we've been truly blessed by the love and support of all of our friends and family over the last 24 hours -- as well as during the duration of the pregnancy.

You can see a few pictures of the Red Sox' future starting catcher below:

The Republicans Deserved to Lose Yesterday

While we CONTINUE to wait for the baby to arrive, I thought I'd post...

I think it's become painfully clear that this year's election was a referendum on two things: 1. We really hate the war in Iraq. 2. We really hate each other.

The Republicans deserved to lose yesterday because when Republicans act like Democrats, Republicans lose. If you want to maintain a conservative voter base, you have to do conservative things (be conservative with the country's finances, at least pretend to care about border security, et cetera). The Republicans didn't do those things, so our country is now left with a Republican party full of wimps and a Democratic party without much of a plan for, well, anything.

I'm glad I'll soon have a son to focus on, as I don't think I can't take much more of the status quo.

No Baby Yet

We are still waiting for the baby.
We are both having trouble sleeping.
We want the baby to be here.

If the baby doesn't come on its own, the doctor is going to induce Melissa on the 13th. I will post any updates as they happen.

While you're (and we're) waiting, be sure to vote tomorrow!

A Quick Thought As We Ramp Up to Election Day...

If the Republicans and Democrats continue to employ (and increase in emphasis) such sinister campaign tactics (nasty ads, character assasination, actions utilized to further polarize the citizens of this country for the sake of victory, etc.), EVENTUALLY they will both lose. And perhaps, PERHAPS a third party could finally emerge on an equal footing. Or a fourth party. Or a fifth party. Or a sixth. Choice is the operative word here. And I'm all for it.

In an age when we have hundreds of choices in, say, chewing gum, it is perplexing that we allow -- and, worse, viciously promote and defend -- the current two political party landscape.

My name is Bill Colrus. And I approve this message.

Soon 'til Sam

Last Friday, we went to the doctor. He said the baby would be here within the week. It is now two days away from being a week. So, the baby should be here soon, yes? Please?

Melissa is now on leave from work. This means I can sleep 45 minutes longer each morning. I could be wrong, but I think this will work wonders for my energy level. Until the baby is here, that is, at which point I'll be dragging a bit, I'd venture to say. So, the whole sleeping later bit will last, like, two days.

I'm getting a little concerned. I pretty much listen to ONE CD, and ONE CD only these days. EVERY day. It's a brand new mix of Sugarplastic tunes that I compiled, and I've pretty much been dissecting it each day in my car. My only real conclusion so far? I would kill to be able to write and play stuff like this. I recently received an E-mail from Ben Eshbach, the band's front man and founder, who says that they are working hard on their next album.

My brother-in-law Roy recently received word that he will be stationed in Baghdad City after the first of the year. He'll be training the Iraqi Army and riding on convoys with them. He is more than enthusiastic and proud to serve. I, on the other hand, am now aggressively re-examining my convictions regarding a myriad of global socio-political issues.
