The Red Sox should still be playing now.
They had the Yankees up against the ropes, were outplaying them, and deserved to win.
I have half a heart to call for the firing of Grady Little. Pedro has ONE COMPLETE GAME ALL YEAR, and the Red Sox' bullpen has been fantastic.
There is no curse. Supernatural powers don't mess with trivial things like baseball. What there is, however, is a supreme case of bad managing. Embree should've pitched to Matsui. Period. If that had happened, then we'd all be laughing and watching as Derek Jeter cried the night away. The Yankees were simply flat, and sometimes a manager just has to overrule the player.
Watching Yankee GM Brian Cashman open a bottle of champagne and yell, "Woo-Hoo!," made me want grab a blunt object, and jab it his skull from through my TV. The bad managing of Grady Little saved lucky/arrogant Brian Cashman's job, and ruined what should have been a much deserved win for Pedro Martinez, and the greatest Red Sox team of my generation. I only hope they realize how good they are, and use it as the impetus to win for years to come.
The Marlins will beat the Yankees, and this will be the last year - for a while - that the Yankees will even get this far. Enjoy it while it lasts, Bronx Bombers. It's over.
Posted by colrus at October 17, 2003 09:49 AM | TrackBackWow. I can sympathize with the crushing feeling that comes with defeat, even the thought of firing Grady Little, but jamming a blunt object through Cashman's skull? I was remarking as I watched the celebration myself that his cheers were ones of extreme relief. Being the GM working for George Steinbrenner is a position I certainly wouldn't want to be in. Lucky? Perhaps. But arrogant? I don't know about that.

Posted by: BobW at October 17, 2003 11:56 AMHey Bill, How's grandpa handling it?
Posted by: Stephan at October 17, 2003 12:06 PMCheck out Bill Simmons' ESPN.com column about last night. Unless you don't want to be any more depressed.
Anyway, go Marlins.
Posted by: kathryn at October 17, 2003 01:05 PMYes. An object thru Cashman' skull. I said it.
Freedom of speech is great.
Relief? Relief, yes, that he got through by the skin of his teeth, winning despite several lame roster moves. There has been talk of him getting canned for a while, and the shot of him in the locker room was nauseating - like he did a good job or something. With their payroll, they should have TROUNCED the Sox. Why pick some of the guys he's acquired when he can have ANYBODY IN THE FRIGGIN' UNIVERSE ?!!?
You gotta pat Rivera, Jeter, Mussina, and (his LUCKIEST move) Boone on the back for getting it done.
Steph, Grandpa seems bummed...
