David Blaine: The Next Evander Holyfield

David Blaine apparently chopped part of his ear off this past weekend. He was promoting an upcoming stunt, and the British press was there to give us the bloody details.

What do you think about this guy? I've watched some of his more tame stuff, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up - not in a good way. I've seen him destroy things, and put them back together, make things disappear and reappear. I've watched him put his hand through walls, and generally freak out all those involved - many of whom have a terrified look on their face when it happens.

I don't quite know what to make of him. When I was younger, I probably would have really liked him. I was big into magic, Houdini, bigfoot, ufo's, etc., but now I just watch him and go, "Honey, what the heck was that? Did you see what he did?" She usually stares in a concerned manner. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this man.

He's either:

1) The devil

or,

2) A really, really good magician

Of course, being a really, really good magician usually involves trickery, lying, and sleight of hand. There is no actual "magic." If everyday people knew the secrets to his tricks, we would think they were really cheap and that David Blaine was nothing more than a smooth-talking huckster.

I had it confirmed by a student of mine who does a lot of street magic himself.

David Blaine does good tricks. My student said he has them all figured out. Most of it is distraction, sleight of hand, prior set-up and rigged apparatus.

there's no doubt he's an awesom illusionist... the card tricks and levitating are simply incredible...

i didn't really get the standing on top of a tall pole in NYC thing... what was the magic in that?

iirc, the block of ice thing was covered in a "magicians reveal the secrets" special on FOX...

I think it's his mysterious ethnicity that makes him creepy, I mean is he hispanic, middle-eastern, what? The tricks are just so-so. Who hasn't levitated at this point?
