Zeppelin? Dylan? Cat Stevens? White Stripes? The Boss? The Stones (the early stuff)? Radiohead? Elvis Costello? Leonard Cohen? Hell, U2!? Talking Heads? New Order? Joy Division? The Clash? THE BEATLES?!?

But then again, we're talking favorite bands...not the BEST bands...

"Best" is a useless, immeasurable term in this discussion. It's all personal prefernce. And some of my choices - I can't explain why.

I indvertantly left the Talking Heads and Clash off my bottom section.

As for the rest of your choices, I a)HATE Springsteen, the Stones, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, New Order, b)AM SICK OF Radiohead, The Beatles, U2, Zeppelin, c)KINDA DIG Cat Stevens, Elvis Costello, White Stripes, and Joy Division.

I should have prefaced this by saying that I've been in TONS of bands and managed record stores and worked at radio stations with people who LOVE almost everything you mentioned. You'd love living up north. Perhaps I have been struck by overexposure to the aforementioned artists.

I dig the Dead Milkmen.

I love Springsteen, the Stones, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and enjoy certain tracks of New Order. And I like the South. I am an enigma. :)

Not liking Dylan is a dangerous path to set upon. "Something is going on here, and you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Colrus?"

Ya, being into music and not liking Dylan is like being into Christianity and not like Jesus.

Okay, maybe he's a case of "his old stuff was way better" but my first exposure to anything Dylan was his performance on the Grammys a couple years back. I couldn't understand a word the old man was singing, and thought to myself "this is the great Bob Dylan?"

You're still not swaying me. Dylan's an decent poet, but whoever gave him his first guitar should be shot.

I still say that Bob Dylan is an evil robot whose sole purpose is to dominate the world.

you last three are the ones who should be shot...by a firing squad this coming sunrise. Josiah has it right, being into music w/o at least being acquainted with dylan is like being into christianity w/o knowing what Jesus said. its close anyway and makes for a strong analogy. not appreciating dylan ("his older stuff anyway") is musical blasphemy. but i suppose it is personal preference...fortunately, musical taste is not the way to heaven or else yall would be on the highway to hell.

Josiah, your list was awesome. and with some built to spill and pealr jam added i could survive with just those artists i think.

and yeah, at the grammy performance he was like 95 years old. he never had much of a voice to begin with so i can understand why that might be abrasive to the ears. however he is a lyrical genius. check out his greatest hits vol 1.

Actually, the best Dylan - or my favorite anyway - is Live, 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. It's all great, but you can't beat the 2nd disk. You can tell by the "boos" alone that this was right around the time he went electric.

i was just giving an album for starters...to give an overview to enable appreciation.

The best part of the Royal Albert Concert is at the very end, when somebody in the crowd screams "Judas!" at the newly electric Dylan. He slurs back, "I don't believe you; you're a liaarrr." Then he turns to the band and yells (you can just hear it on the bootleg) "Play f**kin' loud!" Then they kick into "Like a Rolling Stone" like a house on fire.

I think a generalization is being made here that if some of us wee only "educated in" or "REALLY listened to" or "weren't starters in" the world of Bob Dylan, we would like him. This knoweldge would "enable appreciation" of his nasily pretentious work. Yes, I said pretentious.

It is because I HAVE been exposed to Bob Dylan (had a friend who had ALL HIS ALBUMS, and I've seen him live) that I unequivocably say I can't stand him.

Well, I don't care if you like Dylan or not, but I think it's cool to see Yes on your list. I dig those guys a bunch. That band is a showcase for some of the greatest talent of the past 30 (or so) years, not to mention being one of the most innovative musical groups ever.

I don't care either. I don't get King Crimson, but I still like Bill. He's good people.

I got the newest White Stripes album - "Elephant."
It's quite good. I'm a drummer, and I actually dig Meg's much-maligned playing. I've heard worse.

I also forgot to list how much I dig Junior Brown. "My wife thinks you're dead" is a classic, and he is an UNBELIEVEABLE guitar player...If you can stand old-school country infused with Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Has anybody seen that victoria's secret commercial with dylan's music playing? Apparently one even has images of dylan too? is this not the end of the world as we knew it?
