Dat Phan just won "Last Comic Standing."
What the heck just happened?
Ralphie was MUCH funnier.
Is it me? Did someone just jab a fork in my eye?
Posted by colrus at August 5, 2003 10:11 PM | TrackBackI'm pretty sure that Dat one because of the whole sympathy, sentimental favorite thing. You know the whole business about living underneath a desk and all that. I agree that Ralphie was funnier and probably would have a more successful show on Comedy Central (I wonder what their execs think of this), but 10 million people (or something like that) voted for Dat and he won.
I had one other thought as I was watching last night. I wonder if Dat would have won in a head to head against Ralphie. It seems to me that the voting was diluted by having 5 candidates. In a head to head you get a more accurate portrayal of who people like better. There probably would have been people that voted for Ralphie over Dat but voted for one of the other contestants instead. Just a thought.
Posted by: bhuffine at August 6, 2003 08:21 AMI can't stand how Dat Phan incessantly impersonates his mother, but I think his routine is a lot less vulgar that Ralphie's. However, Ralphie is funnier than Dat by a long shot. I didn't really care who won, though--I liked Rob Cantrell and Dave Mordahl better that all of them anyway.
Posted by: ron at August 6, 2003 12:24 PMDat=less vulgar.
Ralphie=More funny.
Sad, but true.
Dat won? Who cares. The staple of every Asian American comics act has been to impersonate their mother. People, it will get old very quick. Think Margret Chow. Man, I can't stand her. I really can't stand her. Talk about a tired act. Anyway, I wouldn't feel too bad for Ralphie or any of the other four comics. The real bank is made on the road, and they'll do quite well at comedy stores across the heartland. Also, the TV deal Dat won will be do-do. It's $100K that's going to be split between his agent, his manager, the gov'ment and the guy who owns the desk he's been sleeping under. He'll hit the road before The Dat Show sees the light of day.
Posted by: PMAN at August 7, 2003 09:20 AMGeeze, people! Get over it. True, he talks about his mom 85% of the time, but it's like a phase. HE even said himself, he will eventually do non-asian jokes! Whoop-dee-do, aren't you guys glad to hear that. And, isn't it normal for a comedian to talk about his family? They are a part of him, so he just uses his life experiences in his jokes. Give him a break. I thought he was funny and great! He won, and THAT'S THAT! Accept it! Raphie, no doubt was funny too, but if he won, he would have had a heart attack or something within 2 years or something! HE'S A BIG GUY!!!

Posted by: hey there at August 17, 2003 10:56 PMSo what if Dat Phan won and you dont like it, what now he has to find a way to spend the money he is gonna be making from his special on Comedy Central and what will you be doing? you are gonna be sitting on your fat sorry asses being jealous of him and insulting him because he won, why dont you all just try to do better?
Posted by: John at August 20, 2003 04:38 PMI don't understand all these negativities going on and talking shit on Dat Phan. Obviously, he won bec people voted for him so what is that matter with you peeps? Why can't we all be happy for him. I think those other contestants like; Dave Mordal, Rich Voss, Tess, etc lost bec....I don't know if you guys have noticed, but don't u think that they lost because people who were watching noticed that they have an ugly attitude for an ugly person. I think if you're ugly you don't have the right to have an ugly personality because that will make u uglier....
Posted by: Jane at October 31, 2003 03:58 PMI didn't think that Dat Phan was funny. Meanwhile, Dave Mordahl is playing the Orpheum here in town. No tickets available, sold out.
Posted by: Craig at November 1, 2003 09:29 PMDon't you people understand the whole point of comedy? or is it because you're all just plain stupid?..Dat Phan did not intend to insult his mother...it is a part of his background and should also be taken as a joke because he is a comedian! Come on he loves his parents he even bought them a house and everything they need. He is a very talented man and deserves better than all these craps you're posting here.
Posted by: Katie at November 20, 2003 11:20 PMI thought Dat Phan had some funny stuff, but all in all he isn't very clever. Thing is, is most people like his style of humor that's why the majority voted for him. What I couldn't believe is that Ralphie and that fat black girl got to the top. They are the true talentless one. A fat ugly piece of crap who goes up and says crude things about being a stripper at a fat girls only place, and a fat guy who talks like he's some stupid homie guy from LA, but grew up and lives in Texas and calls it "da hood" (obviously some poser) and people laugh just because of his voice. The main problem with a lot of black comedians is that they are only funny to most people because of their voice. I don't even think that's funny enough to make them funny. The only one talented in the top 5 was Rich Voss, and he WAS too good for that event.
