I know this guy who, whenever he gets change back, thinks of a historical event. For example: if he got $14.92 back, he would think about Columbus coming to America. If he got $10.66, he would probably think of the Norman Conquest. (Obviously, this works best for amounts under $20.03.)
Whenever I try to think of a date to match my change, I usually draw a blank...but it does make me think: at least one person (and probably hundreds of people) that are my direct relatives were alive then. They were just living their lives, minding their business. I have no idea who they were. I can narrow it down to a country, at best. They probably gave little thought to the fact that the things they did every day would in some way impact the things that I do today. In turn, I'm reminded that the things I do today could have great impact on hundreds of people in the future...kind of intimidating, huh?
