Chocolate... which is best pronounced "chocolat" like the movie... which was great, by the way.

Posted by: Shannon at August 7, 2003 12:21 PM

ugh, are you serious? chocolat was a horrendous movie.

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 7, 2003 12:31 PM

Vanilla?!! Man, I totally had you pegged for chocolate Christin.

Posted by: Patrick at August 7, 2003 01:02 PM

Vanilla is way better than chocolate, as far as ice cream goes at least.

Posted by: Andrew at August 7, 2003 01:09 PM

im for vanilla. and chocolate is best pronounced in mimickry of the movie pronunciation such as (i dont know if i can convey it) "choc-laaa" almost like youre spitting up while youre getting your tongue depressed by a doctor, with an emphasized short "a" sound.

Hooray for vanilla and for Chocolat.

And horray for Johnny Depp, while we're at it.

Posted by: Micah at August 7, 2003 02:00 PM

johnny depp rocks, but chocolaaa sucked. i mean lets be frank here.

Posted by: dp at August 7, 2003 03:20 PM

Vanilla! With real vanilla bean flecks.

Posted by: lucyzoe at August 7, 2003 03:20 PM

I'm definitely for chocolate and Chocolat. That movie made me hungry.

Breyers Vanilla Ice Cream buy one get one free at Harris Teeter, just picked some up!!!!

Posted by: Tom at August 7, 2003 04:02 PM

You either love Chocolat, or hate it, I guess. Funny how all the girls like it though, while you guys just can't branch out... what a pity.

Posted by: Shannon at August 7, 2003 04:44 PM

I didn't care for Chocolat myself. The old "evil Christians" plot always gets to me.

Johnny Depp on the other hand...

Posted by: Christin at August 7, 2003 05:35 PM

dude, there are admittedly some good chick flicks out there (when harry met sally, amelie, etc.) but chocolat is not one of em. but since no vanilla movie has been brought up yet, vanilla sky was pretty good.

Posted by: dp at August 8, 2003 12:17 AM

Come on, now. We don't need to dichotomize. Chocolate can be good, vanilla can be good, depending on a variety of factors.

This girl didn't like that movie. The rabid anti-Christianity was insufferable.

I'm hungry.

Okay, so some girls didn't like chocolat... i shouldn't have generalized. But I still stick to my guns, I liked it.

I do, however, enjoy the vanilla icecream with the flecks in it occasionally.

Posted by: Shannon at August 8, 2003 12:50 PM

It really depends on the brand of ice cream. Bryers has the best vanilla with the beans in it and everything. But, I do like chocolate syrup on the vanilla- so it isn't technically vanilla anymore, but is it really chocolate?

I too liked the movie chocolat. I agree that it had its probelms, but if I based my like or dislike of a movie on whether or not they potrayed Christians acurately, then it would be hard to find a movie that could be liked.

Posted by: Lisa at August 8, 2003 06:08 PM

that's not true. most movies don't even attempt to portray Christians. and perhaps that is a fault in itself, but i doubt it, and i'm not going to get into that here. i thought chocolat was so blatantly anti-Christian in its sentiment and its caricatures, that it was impossible to like. and it was freaking boring. but i still love johnny depp.

Posted by: UJ at August 9, 2003 02:40 AM

I have to disagree with you Josh. I think just about every movie I've ever seen has some sort of portrayal of Christianity. I won't proclaim that as objective truth- because it is simply an opinion and you are free to disagree. This movie (chocolat) cast a particularly bad light on a certain type of Christian. I find it ironic that we can make fun of these same "types" all the time- in books, sermons, magazine articles. We can all but damn them to hell and it be "for the love of the brethren". But, when the outside world picks up on all the pettiness and portrays it- we get all hot and bothered and insist that they are being unjust and anti-christian. The real problem is that there are Christians like that. I'm anti those types of Christians too. I enjoyed the movie because I like chocolate and I liked the actors and I like watching movies. If anything, that part of it was convicting. But, I must stop now. This is not even what Christin intended for this post. So, I'll stop cluttering up hers.

you're right lisa, most movies portray some kind/form/subtext of CHRISTIANITY. this can be the creation, worship, redemption, whatever. but that is not what you said originally. you were talking about portraying CHRISTIANS, and that is what i took issue with. most movies don't really attempt to portray CHRISTIANS, and that is what chocolat does, and does poorly, and blasphemously in my opinion. that, plus the fact that it bored me, was why i hated the movie.

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 11, 2003 12:22 PM

oh, and yes, i know there are Christians that are like that out in the world, i just don't like movies that try and pigeonhole ALL Christians as like that. it casts a terrible light on Christianity as a whole. just because there are some theologically unsound, stuffed-shirt Christians out there, or even some people who claim to be Christians who are not, that doesn't mean that Christianity has to be portrayed that way.

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 11, 2003 12:26 PM

Christin, bet you didn't think this subject would be so inflammatory, huh?

I took that movie, as I do most movies with any Christian references, with a grain of salt. (chocolate with salt? yay) Certainly, there are Christians like those in the movie... I think they serve as a fine example of how NOT to behave, and it shows us the result of a church that has no charity or love. I would also say, that the general public recognizes that most Christians are not so pious and superior.

Come on! It was over CHOCOLATE. I doubt people honestly think that Christians would react that way, no matter how deliciously sinful Chocolate is.

I notice there's no movie about the tastiness of Vanilla. Hm.

Posted by: Shannon at August 12, 2003 07:59 AM

it wasn't about chocolate. that's the point. chocolate is a metaphor. and i wouldn't be so quick to give this unbelieving country and the pagans who made the movie the benefit of the doubt on their view of Christians. that's what got us into this mess in the first place, our light view of sin.

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 12, 2003 10:29 AM

metaphor shmetaphor. i still say it was about chocolate and gypsies.

Posted by: Shannon at August 12, 2003 12:39 PM

as my good friend jerry seinfeld would say:

"that's a shame".

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 12, 2003 02:33 PM

touche. i guess you're right, i must submit to the wisdom of seinfeld. tell ya what, i'll rewatch the movie, and see if my opinion differs the second time around. i make no promises, but i'll keep an open mind.

Posted by: Shannon at August 12, 2003 02:41 PM

Y'all are out of control.

Posted by: Christin at August 12, 2003 02:44 PM

i'm not trying to be "holier than thou/out of control" on this. i'm sure there are movies i like that you would shake your head and laugh at. i'm just challenging some of the assumptions people are making on this movie in particular, because i reviled it so thoroughly. these are the same people who made "cider house rules", a despicable and evil film (though well done, as was chocolat). and they irk me. if you liked it, fine, i don't want to be a movie snob. i just thought it portrayed christians/christianity poorly, and that's one reason i hated it. you chose to focus on other themes of the movie, and that is fine and dandy.

Posted by: Uncle Josh at August 12, 2003 06:31 PM

I'm just joking on the "out of control" comment...it was more about the number of comments than the content of the comments.

I agree with your opinion of Chocolat, UJ. I disliked it for the same reason...in fact, Cider House Rules was the exact movie I thought of that fit into a similar category.

My question is this; is any movie that sets up a 'morally superior' group as the bad guys specifically targeting Christians? Or do we equate the stuffed shirt types with Christianity and take offense where none is necessarily intended? Keep in mind I haven't seen the movies ya'll are talking about. I'm too busy doing manly stuff.

Posted by: Patrick at August 13, 2003 01:13 AM

no patrick, in other movies, Christians might not be specifically targeted, but they are in chocolat, the movie in question.

I promised I wouldn't clutter up Christin's blog anymore with my thoughts on this- but I've found that I have more to say on the matter. So, if you care to read my thoughts- feel free to visit biosophilia.chatablogs.com
