I've never been to New Orleans before, but I think I'm going for a few days at the end of the month. Do any of you who are familiar with N.O. have any suggestions on where I should go? (I'm pretty sure we'll be staying in the Bourbon Street area.)
Posted by christin at July 9, 2003 10:13 AM | TrackBackYou should try to find a place in the Garden District. We went there on our honeymoon and stayed at the Prytania Park Hotel, and just took the trolley back into the French Market Area & Bourbon St.
BTW, we are only an hour from New Orleans- you'll probably come through Baton Rouge... we'd be a great pit stop!
Here, here. I second Garden District. Bourbon is gross and stinky. The street car runs right to the Quarter. It's $1.25 exact change every time you get on. It runs right by the zoo, wh. I highly recommend. If you don't want all the crowds and gross stuff of Cafe du Monde, there's a lovely quiet place to get wonderful beignets in the Quarter. Cafe Beignet on Royal Street. If you want to go out for a great meal, go to a restaurant uptown. I could name bazillions off that we LOVE. But only if you want me to, and I'll tell you how to get to them from the street car line. I also highly recommend bopping around Magazine Street, wh. is one of my fave streets in the city. You can get to it by walking towards the river a few blocks. How long are you going to be here? when are you coming?
Posted by: jeannette at July 9, 2003 12:26 PMI also recommend riding the ferry to Algiers. It's free for foot passengers. It's fun to ride across and back. It's cool because you're on the river and you get a great view of the city.
If you will be here on a Sunday, we have a great church...
Posted by: jeannette at July 9, 2003 12:30 PMYou have to go to at least one of Emeril's three restauraunts, and demand he cook for you, so you can hear him say "Bam, another notch!" (I think that's what he says).
Posted by: Tom at July 9, 2003 01:00 PMokay, i knew trolley wasn't right, but i couldn't think of the correct word. streetcar it is.
Posted by: Shannon at July 9, 2003 01:15 PMI'll be going for 3 days/2nights during the last week of July. I'm going with 2 friends who are coming in (one from Idaho, one from DC). They're paying for the hotel, so I don't feel like I have a ton of say in the locale, but I'll recommend the Garden District. We won't be there on a Sunday, Jeannette, but maybe I'll make it down there some other time. Since I'll be with others, and I don't know what they have in mind, I just thought I'd get some suggestions. Hopefully, we can stop and see y'all Shannon. I'll let you know when we have more definite plans. Thanks! If anyone thinks of anything between now and the end of the month, let me know.
Posted by: Christin at July 9, 2003 01:16 PMWe're going to be in N.O. during the end of the month too- the 25th-27th. Maybe we'll see ya there if you're planning on attending the International Piano Competition there at Loyola!!! :) It'll be my first time to go since I was 8- so, I'm looking forward to it. Have a great time!
Posted by: Lisa Huntington at July 9, 2003 05:26 PMWell, I have to tell you of at least one of my favorite restaurants. La Crepe Nanou. It's a lovely creperie that feels just like Paris. It's on the corner of Prytania and Robert. Prytania is just a couple of blocks parallel with St. Charles.
Posted by: jeannette at July 9, 2003 08:24 PMOh no, wait. The street car doesn't run exactly by the zoo, rather Audobon Park. The zoo is off of Magazine.
Posted by: jeannette at July 9, 2003 08:25 PMAnd for some good jazz you could do the touristy thing and go to Snug Harbor, but the Funky Butt on N. Rampart provides a hip, more local alternative.
Posted by: jeannette at July 9, 2003 08:26 PMHey Christin, if you do end up going to the Funky Butt (and with a name like that, how could you not?) bring me back a t-shirt.
Posted by: Micah at July 10, 2003 09:15 AMWe also went there on our honeymoon in Dec 2000 and stayed at The Columns in the Garden District. We hung around the French Quarter every day. It is pretty amazing how Bourbon Street stinks, but as soon as you turn off into the rest of the FQ, it doesn't. I highly recommend Irene's in the French Quarter for dinner ... simply the best Italian Food I've ever had.
Posted by: dawn at July 10, 2003 09:18 AMN.O. is so much fun and I know that you will have a blast. Magazine St. is one of my favorates. Be careful around Bourbon St. because if you walk to far in one direction you might start seeing a bunch of rainbow flags.
Also I love to stop and rest and watch the acrobats in front of the big church (sorry I don't know the name of the street.) But you will know what I mean when you see it. You will have to have a Hurricain for me. Heck have two!
hey Christin/Lisa, we were there in Dec. I also would highly recommend staying in the garden district. La Madeleine is a wonderful and affordable French cafe and bakery with authentic French decor and a terrific selection of food. There are several locations in New Orleans: 1327 St. Charles Ave., 547 St. Anne Street in the Quarter and 601 S. Carrollton Ave.
For music, Preservation Hall is absolutely the best traditional jazz you'll hear anywhere. To quote Louis Armstrong, "Preservation Hall, now that's where you'll find all the greats."
Hope you both have a great time!!!
Thanks again for the input, y'all.
Lisa, well be there after you have left.
Jeannette, the Funky Butt sounds tempting. (I'll see about a shirt, Micah.)
Jen, I don't think I should be drinking for you, since you're pregnant, but I'll have a hurricaine and think about you.
Jennie, La Madeleine sounds good. Hopefully, we can check it out.
I'm definitely sold on the French Quarter and the Garden District.
