Wow, what a spin. If you read all of what she said, she's obviously saying there are other things that need to be sent besides clothing.

Nice spin on your part. The whole "let them go naked" comment, as opposed to asking the question "why are we sending clothes when what they need is water?" shows the typical white European colonialist attitude toward those who are poorer and darker. It's precisely the sort of comment that you would expect from the daughter of European colonialists. You don't hear her suggesting that the kids in Florida who lost everything should go naked, only those in the Caribbean.

And we really don’t know what she had to say concerning the kids in Florida because this was a Caribbean relief effort.

If Florida didn’t have water, generators, or food, wouldn’t you rather the children go naked until the first three needs listed were met?

I would rather my kids have the absolute necessities to sustain life (re: food/water) before clothes.

Be naked and eat/stay alive or be clothed and starve...interesting choice. Ms. Kerry may not have chosed the correct phrasing, but she is correct in this situation.

Sorry, I still see the way she said it as an example of her whole european colonialist attitude towards those poorer and darker than her in other countries. The people living on a lot of the Caribbean islands lost EVERYTHING, and while food and water are top priorities, they need clothes too, and having some rich colonialist type tell you that you should get rid of the last shreds of human dignity and go naked is the last thing that people who lost EVERYTHING need to hear.

I'm really having a hard time believing that if you all and your families had lost everything but the clothes on your backs that you would be happy if some rich politician's wife told you that your children should go naked. It's not a binary choice, water or clothes, they can send both.

I come from Europe, but I agree with you, Kathryn. I encourage Mrs. Kerry to hang around naked for a while, so that she would reconsider if people really need power more than clothes.

Just to make it clear, I'm not making any statements against Europe or Europeans in general, just European colonialists (which is what she is) and their patriarchial attitude towards those who are darker skined and of non-European descent. And, at the heart of it, it's her patriarchial attitude (which comes through quite clear in her comments) towards the people in the Caribbean that's the problem.

Yes, and that's why I hold that she's being condescending and patriachial. She shows up for a photo op, and then starts telling the people at the organization that they shouldn't be doing things they way that they are and should let the people go naked, as though she knows better about what the people in the Caribbean need than they do. Again, yes, water is important, but they lost EVERYTHING.

If Laura Bush had said this, the press and the liberals would be frying her ass right now!

I'm all for fried ass, but I think Rex is right, that was a total out of context quote, at least the way you wrote it in your piece Kathryn. You read your post and you think she's some heartless bastard who doesn't want kids to have clothes. And water and food are way more important than clothes... just ask catacombs.
