If there was any doubt before, there shouldn't be any doubt now that Rush Limbaugh really is an idiot. His comments about Donovan McNabb being overrated because the media wants a black quarterback to succeed are just nuts. If he wants to argue that McNabb is overrated, he can go right ahead and a lot of people would agree with him (I tend to think that the media overlooks his poor passing because they are enamored with mobile quarterbacks). But, to turn it into a racial issue is totally uncalled for.
Posted by kathryn at Octubre 1, 2003 06:50 PM | TrackBackAfraid I'm gonna have to disagree with you, and not because I'm some huge Limbaugh fan. I think that special attention is paid in the media to black quarterbacks, if anything because there just aren't a lot of them. To call Limbaugh's comments racial is preposterous, in my opinion. I think he was just stating what a lot of people, who simply don't have the balls, want to say. I'm certainly not sticking up for Limbaugh, but I'm really tired of people jumping on the slightest thing that might have a whiff of scandal. Let's just move on to something else, you know?
Posted by: andy patton at Octubre 1, 2003 07:30 PMI'm not the one who made it a racial issue, Limbaugh is. If he wants to say that McNabb is overrated, that's fine with me--I agree. The stupidity comes in saying that people think he's good because they are falling all over themselves to support a black quarterback. There is absolutely no evidence that the media overrates black quarterbacks just because they are black. If that was the case, then the media would have been more supportive of Shawn King, formerly the Bucs starting quarterback, and now their backup. A lot of Tampa Bay fans overlook King's faults because he's the hometown guy, but the sports media are all very quick to point out his every flaw. Furthermore, I don't think that the media is so easy on McNabb as Limbaugh seems to think--just read the Philadelphia Inquirer or Daily News (what they have to say about McNabb ain't pretty).
The point is, whether McNabb is overrated or not has nothing to do with what color his skin is. The media thinks he's great for they same reason they think Vick is great--because he can run.
Posted by: kathryn at Octubre 1, 2003 10:09 PMYou make good points, and I certainly wasn't accusing *you* of making it a racial issue - aplogies if that's how it came across. Regardless, as you've stated in the last entry, he's resigned his position, so hopefully we really can move on to something else.
Posted by: andy patton at Octubre 2, 2003 06:16 AMYeah, well the thing that bugs me big time is that a lot of people think that Rush actually does speak for all conservatives, when he doesn't. I didn't hear it, but my mom saw an interview with Doug Williams (won a Superbowl with the Redskins, now head coach at Grambling), where he did in fact lump all conservatives in with Rush, which is not that surprising that people would think that way, since Rush has set himself up as the voice of conservative America.
