That Girl Can Punch!

The new Laura Croft movie is coming out, and I'm not ashamed to say I want to see it. I know, I'd probably be the only girl in the theatre - I was for the first one. But, let me tell ya, I dig chicks that can fight. I always have- starting way back with Wonder Woman, and making my way through Zena (pre-lesbo episodes), Buffy, Dark Angel, and currently Sydney Bristow on Alias. (that's an abbreviated list by the way) I don't know what it is about a girl who can take care of herself, but it's very cool in my book.

And no, I'm not a man-hater.. I'm not saying women don't need men, I'm not saying we're stronger, I'm not railing against the patriarchal society, etc. etc. I'm just saying, I'd rather see a girl kick butt than a guy, because it's more compelling, more of a leap than a man versus his own peers.

In that vein, I have taken taekwondo off and on through the years, and am getting ready to pick it back up again. (I usually get to yellow belt, then money or circumstances interrupt me). It's not that I want to beat people up, but it feels very good to know you aren't defenseless. Plus, it's great excercise, it's good discipline, and I look great in a Gi.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I don't have any desire to see the movie. I don't mind the action films where a good bit of marshal arts are involved, but I've never really "loved" them. Nor have I ever really been interested in knowing how to do them myself. I like to do Tae Bo- but that is about as close as I get to anything "kirate-ish". But, it is nice to know that there are women out there who aren't hung up on male hatred that do enjoy these things. You are every bit a lady- so it is also good to know that you can enjoy those things, even learn how to do them and maintain your feminine grace. Good for you!

It may surprise you to find out that I'm not much of a fighter myself (ha!) and girl-action movies are not usually the first on my list, but I watched an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer yesterday, and I have to admit that I enjoyed it.

They do have an appeal, but I know it's not everyone's thing. I do find it strange that there aren't many straight women out there that like these same things... Why would that be?

Yes!!! Lara Croft is number two on my top five list for this summer... which includes (in order) "League of ExtraOrdinary Gentlemen" with Sean Connery (which I saw Saturday... and it was GREAT by the way... a must see)... X-Men 2, Matrix Revisited, and, yes, I confess, Terminator 3...

that's fine about girls kicking butt and all, but tomb raider looks just awful. please just do NOT see charlie's angels 2, i beg you. it was terrible. and i must disagree on league of extraordinary gentlemen...it was mediocre at best. and besides matrix reloaded, pirates of the caribbean is the best movie of the summer.

We finally got around to seeing XMen2 - that was pretty good. Yeah, I know TombRaider has some issues, but there aren't a lot of female heroines around... I have to take what I can get. There is one that looks good... Underworld with Kate Beckinsale.

You CAN'T forget Nikita on "La Femme Nikita." It was a show on U. S. A., and the character of Nikita was played by the stunning Peta Wilson.
