Canadians and the Cinema

With a title like this I could write a pretty inflamattory post about Canadia huh?
So Saturday was a great day.

I drove into Boston, and saw Capturing the Friedman's. It's this insanely intense documentary about a family torn apart by allegations of child molestation. What makes the movie so affecting is the hours and hours of video tape the family shot of themselves during the time. The dramatic element is so intense, you forget that the film is a documentary. Salon.com has an interview with the director Andrew Jareicki.

So I saw that movie. I bough a dozen records, and then I checked out Broken Social Scene. They were playing at this wicked tiny club called TT the Bears. I was against the back wall and was probably 15 feet from the stage. It was a great show.

BSS(from Canada) does something that I totally love. They "orchestrate" pop music. On of the traditional limits of the rock band has been the two guitar, bass, drum, vocal instrumentation. In this setup the melody, harmony, and bass line were each whollly contained by a single instrument.

In symphonic music composers have often split parts over separate instruments. Broken Social Scene uses anywhere from 3-5 guitars to acheive this very same effect. The results are beautimous. I had a great time.

Furthermore I met some cool graduate students from Brandeis. One of them Laura, was beautiful. She gave me her phone-number. But I didn't ask for it.

SCORE!

Ok, after hearing you, Mesh, and Andy talk about them so much, I've decided to start listening to the Talking Heads.

I think I may be in love with David Byrne...have you heard that song Miss America? Holy Crap...

Ive been listening to the Heads a lot lately too Josiah. Byrne really was Rock's Renaissance Man. Yeah, I regret not getting into them any earlier than I did. I would say the Heads and the Pogues are definitely my two big summer discoveries. I think the hall skit next year should use the Heads, do something to "Wild, Wild Life." Anyway, its weird that Matt, you, and I all seem to be getting excited about this band at the same time but in semi-unrelated ways. Lets watch True Stories sometime if you havent seen it.

i want to be there! i have that cd. also, im sure most of you know this, but radiohead takes their name (im pretty sure) from the song "radio head" off of 'true stories.'

Todd, absolutely lets watch that. Where can we get True Stories? If you havent heard that Miss America song Todd, I swear, it's gotta be in the hall skit next wear....I think its time to start writing it, before Matt starts writing it and screwing it all up with his hipster lack of vision...

They have a copy of True Stories at Blockbuster. Just give me a time this week and Ill watch it with you. We also need to see 28 Days Later so perhaps we can work that out too.

I would like to add that I have absolute confidence in Matt's ability to write a great hall skit. More power to ya. By the way, is Mark Murray going to live on Catacombs? Pardon my repeated postings but I like to break up my thoughts.

Gosh, the internet is a pathetic way to try to convey sarcasm. Of course I have absolutely faith in Matt's ability to write a skit. It was a joke...

Todd give me a call anytime during the day, and we can nail down a time.

who is mark murray?

Posted by: dp at July 17, 2003 01:08 AM

Mark Murray is Mel Murray's brother and he has requested to live on Catacombs.

I e-mailed JWood a request for Mark to be put on our hall early in June, I told Mark to request the Hall on his housing form. JWood never got back to me. But I'd imagine he got the message.

Does Mark look like a girl?
