New Covenant Rule: no balls in commons

According to Matt over on Responsibility Without Power, Covenant has now banned balls in commons areas, especially as they are used for games or sports.

Further, "the rule that 'no outdoor sport can be played indoors' will be strictly enforced."

Looks like this may be the end of hall-ball.

don't look at this as a negative thing.

students will still play the games and get naked. perhaps even in greater numbers...

...and with an added benefit; it will will afford them much more fun the students of years past had.

because such activities are now on the books as "against the rules" they'll get an even bigger rush of it.

now go on and marinate on that.

I don't think this is such a bad rule. I still seeth at the second floor residents in Carter hall for the countless times the ball in question hit the fire alarm thing and off again to the chapel....

But hallball is supposed to be played inside! It's already an indoor sport!

That's an excellent point, Ryan. That should take the wind out of their sails.

I fondly remember games of indoor soccer on Blackwatch, and it is sad that some students will never have those memories. However, I want to point out that most halls (Belz only excluded I believe) have WAPs (wireless access points) installed in locations where they could be easily destroyed during games of hall ball. Damaged units would result in a $1000 fine to the hall for a replacement, a steep price to be sure. Is it worth the risk?

I have found that a lot of these "new" rules are actually old rules that have never been enforced. For example, last fall when a few of us got the brilliant idea to roll someone off the Mac "balcony," we were all fined $100 each for being on the balcony. However, the fine raised an important issue: how can S.D. expect students to respect and honor the rules that they themselves have neglected and not respected?

I think before they weren't expecting to honor the rules. And that was just fine. A rule really only has power if the authorities in power care to enforce it. My hope is that many of these new rules are simply PR moves towards the parents, and in fact they wont be enforced.

all these new rules are strange in their similarity, or perhaps they're not. they all seem to be rules made for the entire body of students at covenant, which will really only have an effect on catacombs. whats more, they seem to be targeted very specifically at one catacombian event - hallball. was it really so detrimental?

2nd floor residents in Carter played a lot of hallball...at least when I was there...

Hmmm Fredo, interesting point:

But no, lotsof other halls have nudity traditions, in particular Ghetto and Sutherland in recent years.

I sympathise with your reaction to the crackdown, but it could be worse. My alma mater decided to bulldoze the student worship center (one of the oldest and most beloved buildings on campus) to make a bigger parking lot for the new gym.

You know, considering your last post, the phrase "no balls in commons" could have multiple meanings.

Heh.

Mesh! That's dirty!!

I agree with andy. It seems like these rules are obliquely aimed at Catacombs. We are the most notorious for enthusiastic nudity and we made hallball an event (throughout Covenant, there is no question that "naked hallball" is an oxymoron.) that was feared, or at least heard, across campus. We are also usually behind, or at least involved in, any ruckus that is raised at Covenant, and it seems that SD is trying to squelch that as much as possible.
